How to Stop the Media Attack on Your Body

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the constant message that my natural, curvy, feminine body is unacceptable. I’m tired of being freaked out when I hear five year old girls already criticizing their bodies and thinking they need to lose weight. I’m tired of the media foisting their limited, unattainable versions of beauty on us.

Today’s lightweight beauty ideal is entirely an invention of the media machine. Nature never intended women to look like busty teenage boys, but the media’s relentless portrayal of the body type powerfully defines it as the pinnacle of beauty.

Without starvation and plastic surgery, it is impossible for 99% of women to realize this ideal. So we learn to dislike our naturally beautiful bodies and desperately try to change them. The toxic body messages that flood us every day can lead to eating disorders and general unhappiness.

53% of 13-year-old girls and 80% of adult women loathe their bodies every day. It doesn’t have to be like this. People are born with all different body shapes and sizes. We don’t have to let the media continue to define one beauty as an ideal. We don’t have to let them continue to ruin countless lives in pursuit of more profit.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Media Oversight Program is working to change toxic media messages. You can help by joining free shows and following magazines, TV and radio. Track what you see, then send your positive and negative findings to NEDA.

They write at least one commendation or protest letter to the company on behalf of the Watchdogs each quarter and post the results on the NEDA Media Watchdog website. Since the program began in 1997, more than half of the ads they protested have stopped running.

It’s time to stop the media attacks on our bodies. The Watchdog Program gives us a powerful voice for change.

What to look for:

* Ads with messages or images designed to make people feel bad about their body shape or size.

* Thin is the only acceptable body type.

* Programs or commercials that make fun of heavy people or imply that they are inferior or unacceptable.

* Idealized for someone who is dieting or starving.

* Pictured are people using food for comfort, stress relief or companionship.

* A thin model or actress is portrayed as the ideal beauty or star of the show.

* Advocates fitness and exercise just for losing weight, not for getting fit, feeling good and having fun.

* Ads that portray people of all shapes and sizes in a positive manner.

*People eat healthy, tasty food, including desserts.

* Celebrating natural diversity and enjoying life.

If you want to take your campaign a step further, write your own letter of praise or protest to advertisers or media outlets.

Stir up some feathers and let them know that assaults on our bodies will not be tolerated and that positive diversity is appreciated. Tell them you will not buy their product because of offensive advertising.

Be sure to thank the company for the positive message. Every step toward healthy body diversity is great. Thank them for being part of a culture that appreciates health and beauty in every way.
