Scott Tidal Fly Rod Review

2015 seems to be the year of the mid-priced rod. When it comes to mid-range rods for the season, every rod maker seems to be saying “kill the old and bring in the new”. Starting with Scott Tidal, I’ll take you through the world of these new mid-range rods.

Scott has long been known as the leader in fly rod technology and they prove it with the Tidal line of rods. These rods come in 7 to 12 weight models, all 9’0″ in length. They’re built with the same X-Core and multi-modulus technology as the pricier rods, and at $475, these rods won’t bankruptcy.

For testing purposes, I paired a 9-weight Scott Tidal rod with an Orvis Hydros V-reel spooled with a Hatch Tropical 9-weight line. This rod is definitely a fast action rod, but with a softer tip than the S4s or Radian. With all anodized hardware and premium corks, this rod is salt water ready and built to last. They feature Scott’s socket ferrules and are proudly made in the USA.

In every way, this stick feels like a dream. Usually I prefer medium action rods, but this baby carrier is made for boys! I was able to do an easy 80 foot round trip with no trouble. This rod is slightly heavier than other mid-range offerings from other companies, but the softer tip and ease of casting more than makes up for the heavier weight. I was able to pick up up to 80 feet of line and accurately cast it back with a one-handed cast, which every saltwater fisherman knows is the power of a rod. Not only is this rod a true sling, but it is highly accurate from 20 feet to 60 feet and beyond. I set the targets at 20, 30, 50, and 60 feet, and with 15 throws each, I only missed the target twice, and by an inch.

I would give this rod a 9/10. If they had lost a little weight it would have been a perfect 10 in my opinion. Sturdy, saltable hardware, a tip light enough for delicate presentations, and a stem strong enough to throw an entire range make this rod one of the best rods in this price range that I’ve yet to test this year. Once again, Scott offers quality rods at a price that the uninitiated can afford. Try it for yourself, I’m sure you’ll be dying to take one home.
