The modern world and its way of life are waging a silent war on modern masculinity. The introduction outlines the problem. Sperm counts in men in developed countries are decreasing. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction has made pharmaceutical companies billions of dollars. The prostate grows while the libido shrinks. According to Dr. Sears, 10% of his male patients have higher estrogen levels than testosterone levels.
Chapter 1 aptly discusses the subject of testosterone. While men are often and unfairly accused of violence, this is what keeps us healthy and strong. Declining testosterone levels can lead to “grumpy old man” syndrome.
Another cause of low testosterone may be a low-fat diet.
Additionally, various pollutants in our environment can reduce testosterone levels and increase estrogen levels. Men are supposed to have some estrogen, but when our estrogen levels rise too high compared to our testosterone, we are no longer manly men.
That’s when we start suffering from many physical and mental health issues. Lack of libido is one, but so is obesity and chronic fatigue. We should have ten times more testosterone than estrogen.
As he does throughout the book, after describing a problem and its causes and effects, he presents the solution. He recommends a variety of supplements and activities.

Exercise is also important for building and maintaining muscle mass. Dr. Sears advocates a progressive sprinting program he calls PACE, rather than the modern trend of long, slow “cardio.” Additionally, he recommends doing calisthenics and taking certain supplements, such as creatine.
There are several chapters that discuss one of the major health problems of older adults – a growing prostate. Closely related to this is retention of sexual capacity.
This is followed by chapters on inflammation that causes joint problems and prevents loss of brain function.
Dr. Sears is not afraid to take on challenges from conventional or alternative medical institutions. It was a refreshing read for him.
There’s a lot of advice here, and of course many men won’t welcome it. They know they should exercise more, but they don’t. Men who are willing to work out need to find out what works best for them, and not waste time with long jogs that could damage their hearts.
He recommends a lot of different supplements, but doesn’t pretend they’re panaceas. They need to be combined with a good diet (reducing carbohydrates from grains and increasing intake of healthy protein and fruits and vegetables) and proper exercise.
I ate a similar diet to what he recommended, started exercising and took some of the supplements he suggested. I’m not the handsome guy I used to be, but I feel and look better (I’ve lost 28 lbs).
I have no doubt that in the years to come those who follow his plan will have a great advantage over those who do not.
