The Bernese Mountain Dog – A Swiss Treat!

Let’s take the Bernese Mountain Dog or “Berner” by the numbers.

In all respects, this is a large category of breeds. Male height ranges from 24 to 28 inches or 61 to 71 centimeters. It tends to weigh between 85 and 110 pounds or 38 and 50 kilograms. Females, on the other hand, are usually slightly smaller than males at 23 to 27 inches or 58 to 69 centimeters. She weighed between 80 and 105 pounds or 36 and 48 kilograms. Again, only slightly smaller.

You can expect this breed to live for about 6 to 8 years. However, there is some debate about this. Originally, life expectancy was 10 to 12 years, but this number was reduced for health reasons (which we’ll discuss later). A relatively new and credible study shows that the real life expectancy of a Bernese Mountain Dog is 7.2 years.

Litter size is usually 8 pups, although this can vary widely and can be as high as 14 pups.

It’s no surprise that the breed can be traced back to the mountains of Switzerland. In fact, their name is derived from the Swiss canton or canton Bern. But their true origins are speculated to date back thousands of years to the Roman occupation of the region. From what is known of the breed’s development, it was not until the early 1900’s that much attention, if any, was paid to serious purebred breeding. The breed was not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) until the late 1930’s.

The breed’s coloring consists of basic black and tan/rust on the cheeks, part of the chest, all of the legs and under the tail. In addition, it has white on its head, paws, chest and tail.

As mentioned, this is a large dog, but very active and needs regular exercise. Due to their size and temperament, they are not recommended for small living quarters. Give them space.

Their original use was for drafting, hauling, tracking and general farm work, so the breed has conditional use. It is mainly for this reason that the Bernese Mountain Dog needs to be with people and not be alone for long periods of time. Just as importantly, like most dogs, they begin to see their owners as the alpha component in the relationship. They need a clearly defined framework of rules, communicated early in their training process, which in turn produces a happy and balanced companion. As long as the owner is steadfast with the dog, their wisdom can make training easier and more effective without being overly dominant. This can also cause the dog to become comfortable with young children and other animals. The caveat is that no child should be left alone with a dog or any animal that could cause harm; just common sense.

The breed suffers from the ailments associated with most large dogs, such as dysplasia of various body parts (especially the hips), some arthritis, and allergies. Cancer seems to have been a particular problem with this breed, shortening its lifespan somewhat, and sadly, some individuals get sick early in their lives.

The Berner is a depilator and is seasonally heavy, so regular grooming is not only a good bonding exercise, but will reduce the shedding problem or at least make it more manageable.

Regarding the bonding experience with the Bernese Mountain Dog, the breed has an outgoing personality and needs a firm and loving relationship with its owner. Positive reinforcement, being within clear boundaries, lots of space to run and play, long walks and regular grooming will ensure you will be a wonderful companion for many years to come.
