A lot of people have been talking about the P90X over the past few years, and one of the hottest questions I’ve seen is, “Can skinny people gain muscle with the P90X?” Before I answer that, you should know that I’ve been doing the P90X for 3 years . During that time, I gained about 30 pounds. Before you jump to conclusions, though, pay close attention because I need to discuss some important information with you. Also, as you know, this is a review of programs for skinny guys who want to gain weight. If this is not you, this information may or may not be useful.

Today, I want to talk about the “Big Three”. I want to talk about the top 3 reasons why you can build muscle with the P90X, and then the top 3 reasons why you can’t. If you’re a thin person who has trouble gaining weight, pay close attention to everything I’m about to tell you. Even if you decide not to follow the P90X program, this information will still be useful to you.

#1. You will eat more food.

Naturally, when you start an exercise program, your body will require more food. The P90X is no exception. When I first started training, I was eating 3,000 calories a day, and for the longest time, it worked. I gained about 30 lbs in 3 years and am very happy with my results.

#2. You can lift weights.

For skinny people, lifting anything can help them build muscle. It doesn’t matter whether you’re shoveling dirt, hauling hay, or exercising in your living room. Your training program doesn’t have to be perfect, again, as long as you lift things, your muscles will grow.

#3. You’ll be exercising your entire body.

Many people make the mistake of only working the chest and biceps. With the P90X, you get the complete package. You’re exercising your entire body, which will help you build muscle fast.

These are all good reasons.

As you can see, there are 3 important reasons to see this plan progress. On the other hand, there are 3 main reasons why you don’t see progress, or you can see better progress with another program.

#1. You are not doing compound exercises.

In addition to pull-ups, you’ll also be doing push-ups, single-leg deadlifts, and bodyweight squats. Unfortunately, these exercises won’t help you gain weight. Will you see progress? You’ll see gains, but your gains will be minimal and you’ll eventually plateau.

#2. Too much cardio.

If you decide to follow the P90X plan, consider removing one of your cardio workouts. In order to build muscle, your body needs a surplus of calories. With all the cardio in this plan, that’s not going to happen.

#3. You run out of weight.

I mean, your dumbbells can only get you so far. Even if you have 100-pound dumbbells, what about the bench press, squat, and deadlift? As much as I hate to say it, and as much as I love exercising at home, there’s nothing like working out at the gym with a loaded barbell. Think about how many push-ups you need to do to feel the burn in your chest, rather than doing 8 to 12 reps on the bench press.

If you’re new to training, the P90X program is a great place to start. You’ll see some nice gains early on, but as you get used to the program (which can even take a few years), you’ll eventually want to switch to something more advanced.
