New Years Resolutions Done Right

Whether 2010 was good or bad, it is now over and 2011 is upon us. Time to revisit those old New Year’s resolutions and revisit them, right? wrong. Albert Einstein once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”. So, why repeating the same resolutions all over again will only disappoint and frustrate them? Let’s try a different approach.

First, let’s consider what types of resolutions we can make and which ones are best for the way we live this year. Often, most people try to make decisions based on vague goals like “lose weight” or “eat better.” These are not goals, but should be seen as positive outcomes of achieving specific, mission-oriented goals. Tasks don’t sound like fun because they sound like chores, but we can choose fun tasks that will keep us motivated for months or even years.

There are two types of task-oriented goals that make sense: general lifestyle changes and one-off goals. For example, a typical lifestyle change is to walk 30 minutes 3 days a week. In order to successfully change a lifestyle, it takes about 90 days of sustained, conscious effort to stick to it as an unconscious habit that becomes part of a new, better way of life.

One-time goals aren’t usually considered, but can be very fun and stress-relieving, and even if they don’t, can still motivate you to achieve more after you’re done. An example is reading a book you’ve always wanted to read. After reading this book, your resolution is complete. It’s a lot easier than making up your mind to “read more” this year and doing nothing. So when considering resolutions for the year, make sure to decide first on lifestyle changes, one-time goals, or a combination of the two. Now let’s consider some ideas to keep the creativity flowing.

Diet Resolutions

  • drink less soda – It’s definitely a lifestyle solution worth pursuing. Soda has zero nutrients and therefore no health benefits. They’re empty calories that spike insulin levels, erode bones and add body fat. The best way to start is to track how many sodas you drink (regular, diet, alcoholic or otherwise) each day for a week. Then decide to drink one can less per day for the next week, and repeat every week until the average is one less can per day.
  • Drink more water – Here’s another lifestyle solution that can really change your life. Every cell in the body needs proper hydration, which can take away annoying pain. Keep track of how many 8-ounce glasses of water you drink each day for a week, and then increase by one glass each day for every 15 pounds of weight gain (for example, if you weigh 10 8-ounce glasses of water to 150 pounds).
  • track food intake – Sometimes knowing where you are is more important than figuring out where to go. Most people think they’re eating well until they keep a food diary for a week. Record everything that comes out of your mouth for each day of the week and time of day. Sharing this information with a nutritionist, chiropractor, or naturopath can help you understand when and what to eat.

Organize resolutions

  • organize a box or pile – An excellent one-time solution for the beginning of the year. Don’t be disappointed if a lot doesn’t get thrown away. The organization that came out of this event is a huge win in itself. Going through multiple piles can end up putting similar items in one place, such as sports equipment, clothes, memorabilia, etc. However, be careful. Victory often comes with cleansing and organizing that lasts for months.
  • Organize an online account – Another brilliant one-off solution that most people don’t consider. As the years go by, we accumulate more electronic waste, often in the form of information stored in various online accounts. This is a great opportunity to take an account, such as Facebook, email or contacts, and comb through it, deleting or updating old information or files. Deleting or deactivating unused accounts is another great solution to reduce the risk of your online presence being hacked or misused. For the same reason, this is also a good opportunity to update your password.

health resolution

  • an examination – A great one-time solution is to choose a doctor that you haven’t been to in a while or probably never have, have them examine you and guide you towards health solutions. Going to the doctor for an annual physical or seeing a dentist or eye doctor for checkups can prevent major health problems in the future and save you money in the long run. Also consider seeing a chiropractor for a spine and nervous system exam, or a naturopathic doctor for a nutritional exam.
  • take the test -Other great one-time solutions include having specific preventative tests such as Pap smears, mammograms, or bone density tests on an appropriate schedule. For your peace of mind, other tests that should be done include sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, nutritional and vitamin testing, allergy testing, or a spinal scan. Regardless, these tests are usually doctor-recommended, but worth studying. Ultimately, you are responsible for your body.
  • massage – A one-time solution that can definitely relieve stress and benefit your health is to indulge yourself. Find a good massage therapist who you can trust and who works in a clean, professional setting. Choose a gender that suits you best and book an appointment for a great experience.

Resolutions can and should be fun, stress-relieving, motivating, and ultimately actionable. There is no point in making a resolution without follow-up as it will only create more stress and disappointment. In 2011, choose your resolutions wisely, and remember to resolve this year to have more fun and more smiles too.
