Norwegian Forest Cat-The Facts Every Owner Of This Cat Breed Should Know

Dating back to the time of the Vikings, the Norwegian Forest cat is an ancient breed. Mentions of this cat can be found in Norse mythology and Norse fairy tales, but the true origin of his breed is unknown. Domestic breeding of the Norwegian Forest cat known as “skogkatt” in Scandinavia began in 1930, but was not recognized as a breed until the 1970s, when “Wegies” (from “Norwegian “” nickname)’) became popular.

Norwegian forest cats live in harsh, cold climates for most of the year, so their fur is adapted to this environment. It’s long and thick, protects them from hash winters, and is nearly waterproof. They wear a summer coat in spring, causing shedding that needs attention. While some say grooming is unnecessary, regular grooming for Norwegian Forest cats is a useful tool in preventing shedding, although they shed far less than other longhaired cats. Smart, kind, and patient, Norwegian Forest cats make great family pets with children. They are also friendly and gentle, so they get along well with other household pets. This breed loves to climb, so cat condos are a must.

If a Norwegian Forest Cat is not allowed to climb on a regular basis, he may become irritable or bored, which can lead to destructive behavior to relieve boredom.
