Lap-Band Success Story Part 2 – Achieving "Results Not Typical"
In my last article, “Lap-Band Success Story: Achieving “Atypical Results” (Part 1),” I shared my strategy for achieving and maintaining a normal weight with gastric band bariatric surgery. In this article, we explore these strategies in more detail. As a refresher, here’s my understanding of the average weight loss facts or “typical outcomes” for people with serious weight problems based on research I’ve done:
For diet and exercise/medication:
- Only 10 – 40% of patients have 25% excess weight loss (EWL)
- 95% of patients recover (can you say yo-yo)
For a gastric band:
- 50% of normal patient body weight loss (EWL) at 2-3 years of age
- Based on published studies, results are durable and similar to those seen in gastric bypass patients at 3 years and beyond
I’ve experienced the life-changing benefits of Lap-Band surgery – 90 lbs or 100% weight loss and have maintained it since 2007. The typical outcome for me is losing and maintaining half of my excess weight. Building on my first post, I learned how to achieve “untypical results”.
- Journaling has helped me discover that small changes in the foods I eat can increase protein and reduce calories. Journaling helps keep me accountable; even today, I journal regularly.
- I always have a plan, or at least a plan B. I travel a lot and have seemingly unlimited access to foods that can get me into trouble. I always carry food with me to ensure my success. I’m not afraid to order specials at restaurants or ask hotels to open their gyms at 4:30am. There is no reason.
- It is crucial to always have a good support structure in place. Keep building your team.
- Come to the conclusion that this time your weight loss is indeed permanent. You will not fail again. You don’t suddenly wake up fat again. You have a tool to help determine portion sizes, hunger and fullness. As long as you use the tool, it will help you.
- Yes, fillers can still help; it’s one of the features of the band that other bariatric surgeries don’t.
- Be close to your surgeon and his/her staff. Take advantage of the resources they provide.
- Paying it forward; by helping others on this journey, I’m always learning and it feels great!
- Improve your body image; it takes a long time to see your new body the way others see it. Liking what I see in the mirror helps me stay motivated. Learn to say thank you when people compliment your appearance. This can be hard for those of us who have been struggling with our weight.
- Acknowledge and ask your team for help when you’re stuck.
- take more exercise. The benefits of exercise are manifold. Cardio burns calories; more muscle burns more calories, muscle is more compact than fat, so you lose inches, and exercise is good for your physical and mental health. And then for me there are those happy endorphins – I’m hooked. Exercising makes me feel good both physically and mentally, thus starting a wonderful cycle.
- Reward yourself for taking care of your body.
- live your life. Do those things you always avoid because you are too fat or awkward.
It’s important to be really clear about your weight loss, health and quality of life goals. If you have a Lap-Band or REALIZE band, you can learn from others who are successful in the Banded Living community to get the most out of your tools.
