Trekking to Lose Weight
When I think about all the people I’ve met hiking in the past 7 years, I don’t recall anyone saying they hiked to lose weight. Maybe some people don’t want to admit it, but I don’t think weight loss is a huge factor in people going hiking, broadly speaking. But honestly, why not? So many of my friends are almost obsessed with losing weight and staying in ideal shape. I guess it’s a mentality issue. Or maybe just hiking in the backcountry isn’t as trendy as the occasional hour or two at a trendy gym. Expect to burn 4-800 calories per hour when you’re working out at the gym, doing cardio, or some high-energy activity. Compare that to hiking, which is on the lower end of the range. While hiking, the “typical hiker” burns about 4-500 calories per hour. So why is hiking so effective for weight loss?
The two main reasons are:
1. When you hike, you do it all day. You burn calories from morning to night, not just hours in the gym.
2. Stay away from the temptations of everyday life, cookie jars, junk food restaurants, etc. on the trail.
Let’s look at the math.
Let’s say you’re a bit like me, a male, in your 30s, weighing around 160 lbs/72 kg.
1. You go hiking with an extra 15-20 lbs (7-10 kg) in your backpack. You go on for a bit of a trek, but still a good one. You trek 8 hours a day and burn 500 calories an hour. That’s 4000 calories you burn there. You may burn another 1500 calories while resting for the rest of the day.
Total Calories Burned: 5500 CAL/day
2. You do vigorous exercise or exercise, an average of one hour a day. This will burn 800 calories. Other than that, you lead a normal life, doing moderate activities, going to school, the office or light physical work, shopping, doing housework, etc. To do this, your body burns about 2700 calories per day.

That’s right, you’re likely to eat more while hiking. But a lot of the extra calories burned usually come from burning body fat. Hiking is a sustained activity, so it’s easier for the body to burn body fat at a slow but steady pace.
In addition to being good for weight loss, hiking can also bring you closer to some spectacular natural scenery as well as your own body. I don’t hike because I want to lose weight. Whenever I have a few days off or a few weeks free in some way, I do it for fun and feel. While I’m not overweight, I’ve always been much slimmer and, for some reason, have a fresh and positive approach to life!
