Another New Year, Another New Year’s Resolution

Is decluttering your home on your “New Year’s Resolutions” list?

Every year millions of us make a resolution…to lose weight, start exercising, eat healthier and get organized. Will this be the year you really see it through? I’ve seen it, and yes, I’ve done it. As the new year approaches, we start thinking about how we can start over. Enthusiasm and excitement start to build, a little momentum starts to build and we start making New Years resolutions, January 1st…well, maybe January 2nd…well, maybe when the kids go back to school…well, wait What’s wrong with a week? After all, the holidays are stressful and we have to be patient with ourselves and let things get back to normal before tackling a big project.

Then it hits you like a punch in the stomach and it’s the end of January.. what new year’s resolution?

Instead of just thinking about your New Year’s resolutions, treat your goals as an important item.

The first step is to identify a project. When you make up your mind to do too much in the new year, you’re already sabotaging your efforts. When you choose one thing, you’ll be able to focus on that goal and create priorities around that goal.

Another important step is declaring your goals. Tell one person or several people about your goals. This makes it more authentic and builds some accountability. When you tell someone about your resolution, you’re more likely to keep your word. It’s easy to make excuses for yourself, but it’s much harder to let your friends and family down.

hard work now

Write your goals in a notebook, or even on the cover of a notebook, a beautiful notebook, in big, bold, beautiful letters. Write down your goal again and make it more real. If you use your favorite notebook, you’re more likely to use it. If goals are on the cover, you’ll be constantly reminded.

In your new notebook, start breaking down your goals into tasks. Manageable, bite-sized tasks will prevent your project from becoming overwhelming. A task should be something you can do in a relatively short amount of time or with relative ease. If you can’t figure out how you’re going to accomplish a task, you might want to spend a little more time breaking it down further. If your task is too big to handle, or even consider, you’re more likely to give up on it.

then it gets a little fun

Create a resolution board to help remind you of your resolutions and why you made them. The board can be as big as you want. Sometimes you may want something that you can slip into your purse or bag and carry around, other times you may want to stick it on your bathroom mirror or on the wall in your office. Use pictures, words and colors; draw, cut and have fun. Let this resolution board remind you why you are doing all this work and making such a commitment.

Dating?

Start turning those tasks into appointments. Yes, like an appointment with a doctor or dentist. Schedule it on your calendar. You can even choose to use a special color to remind you of its importance. This is a date with yourself. There are no inherent consequences to missing or canceling appointments, so you might want to create something that works for you. I’ll discuss rewards and consequences later. We all know things happen, timelines change, and we’re always prioritizing and re-prioritizing as we go. I really want to stress the importance of rescheduling appointments rather than canceling them in these situations.

Rewards and Consequences

This might actually be the key to making this work. Find something you really enjoy doing that isn’t important. Give them to yourself as a gift for getting things done. Some ideas are:

– Sit up straight and finally finish reading the magazine.

– Call old friends.

– Go for a walk with your neighbors.

– Give yourself a manicure or pedicure.

– Go to the ice cream shop.

– See a movie.

Take a few minutes to make a list of all the gifts you can think of, and add new ones as you think of them. In parentheses, next to your appointment, include your reward or gift as a reminder of why completing the task was worthwhile.

Cheers to your success!

Recording your thoughts and progress in your own dedicated notebook and using all the tools mentioned in this article will surely help you complete your New Year’s resolutions in 2011.
