Is the Paleo Diet the Perfect Diet?
Recently I wrote an article about the perfect diet. In the process of researching and experimenting with Paleo diets, I may have found the perfect diet, at least for myself, and maybe for you. For over forty years I have been interested in diet and its impact on health and longevity. I have always been vegetarian and eat low carb, low fat, high protein etc. Not so much losing weight (I’ve maintained 205 lbs @ 6’3″ for over two decades, thanks in part to diet and exercise.) But feeling healthy and living life to the fullest.
The more I learn about diets, the more I believe that whole, natural, unprocessed foods are the key to good health and the cure for many modern chronic diseases. To me any weight loss diet will help you lose weight if you stick to it. The problem is that sooner or later most people give up on the diet and go back to their old eating habits, gaining weight again and putting themselves at health risk.
The key, then, is not to diet, but to adopt a healthy lifestyle that is conducive to maintaining an ideal weight and being energized. Also, a proper lifestyle eating plan will protect you from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other chronic diseases that plague Western civilization.
One eating plan that claims to do all of the above is the paleo or caveman diet. This diet uses only foods that were available to early humans. Early humans ate fruits and vegetables as well as lean protein from wild animals and fish. The current paleo diet focuses on readily available fruits, nuts and vegetables, lean beef, chicken, eggs and fish.
Basically it’s a low carb-protein diet that fits my lifestyle of eating unprocessed, whole foods. Ideally you have a garden and can hunt and fish so you can provide some or all of your food from organic and/or wild sources. Fortunately, I live in a rural area, and while I don’t hunt, I have a garden, I can fish, and my family also hunts; so I can get pretty close to eating in its purest form.
Here are some benefits of the diet:
1 Paleo Diet does not require hard to find items.
2. Food is basic everyday food, not expensive, exotic food.
3. Food preparation similar or identical to your current cooking method.
4. You never have to warn your guests, family or friends that your diet is weird and they won’t allow you to eat what they offer. (At most, don’t eat too much bread.)
BTW, I will not go on any diets just to embarrass my friends or family. I would simply skip some foods, like white bread or pasta, or eat small amounts, and then go back to my normal meal plan the next day.
