We all want to achieve the goals we set for the New Year, but four out of five never do. So here are my top tips to keep investing in yourself and give your goals and resolutions the fuel they need to achieve:

1. Don’t choose a goal that you think you should do because of outside influences (such as family or peer pressure or a new trend), choose a goal that inspires you and fills you with enthusiasm.

2. Be clear about your intent. It’s not good to be vague about what you want because that will lead to getting nothing. Having concrete steps and measurable intentions for your life and creating a plan that ends with an end result will give you the working steps, the things you need to put into action every day. Without concrete plans and measurable intentions, you’re still in dream mode. Dreams are good, but you are human, so you need to take the next step, otherwise almost nothing will happen. You must have a necessary action plan.

Here’s an example: To prosper don’t say “I’m going to make more money this year,” that’s not specific enough. Say “I’m going to make an extra $200 a week for the next 12 months”. You then have to write down how you will progress towards this goal on a daily, weekly and monthly time frame so your goals can be measured and fine-tuned as you go. It will also keep you motivated to meet the challenges of each day.

Another example might be developing a deeper, more loving relationship with your child. “I’ll spend 20 minutes every other day with one of my kids, giving my undivided attention to an activity, reading to them or talking to them about their life without distractions”. However, this is really a choice, and you need to be aware of your choices at all times. Every time you choose to be distracted, you take fuel from your rocket and the destination becomes a dream all over again. As our friend bestselling author and mentor James Ray said, “Energy flows where the attention is”. No matter what is going on in your life, you have to stay focused on where you are going. Distractions are a test of your commitment and how much you really want the end result. That’s why you must be clear about the inspiration and passion behind each goal. If it’s not there, then you can easily get distracted, and your energy to achieve your goals is diverted out the door. It happens in momentary selection. Choose to be sober in the present moment in the coming year, and you will witness amazing transformations in your life.

4. Celebrate every win along the way, no matter how small you need to admit it’s a win, you’re making progress and pat yourself on the back. For example, today I exercise by walking to the store instead of driving. I choose fresh fruit over cake. These are small steps that add up to a huge goal like weight loss and health gain. Never underestimate every decision you make – it is powerful. Always ask yourself if this choice brings me closer to my goals or further away. You are always in control. It’s your choice and you will keep creating more of what you choose. If you find yourself constantly falling back into old habits, you need to give your intentions more reason. Here, a personal trainer or reading a book like “The Passion Test” might be a good place to start.

5. Be grateful. Gratitude is one of the most powerful magnets in the universe. This is absolutely true. what do you say. Well whenever you start being grateful for the smallest things like even a light switch that brings light into your room so you can read in the evening, do your favorite craft and eat later in the evening stuff etc. You start to see the miracles around you and the amazing goals and intentions other people set and achieve. You gratefully acknowledge these things in your life, like that light switch. Someone had to dream it up, someone else invented it, someone else made it, and someone else had to promote and sell it. So many people are involved in so many amazing ways in your home every day. Gratitude takes you out of your own head space and into a place that can lift your energy and mood.

Gratitude leads to acknowledgment, which leads to mutual appreciation. We are not alone. When we choose to practice gratitude, we experience the dreams and intentions of others around us every day. This is really a great way to improve your attitude and feelings, it will give you more energy and zest for life, and help motivate your goals and intentions.

6. Remember to act on the results of your goals every day. A good way to do this is to visualize the end result. You can do this in your head, or get a vision board and place images and words that match the end result that you can see every day. The idea is to remind myself of how a person would make choices during the day if he had already achieved this goal, like reaching my ideal weight. Do they eat cake or fruit with morning tea?
