This diet is high in vegetables and low in red meat, replacing beef and lamb with poultry and fish; added fat comes from 30-45 grams of olive oil and 5-7 nuts per day. The daily energy intake is 1800 calories for men and 1500 calories for women, with the goal of no more than 35% calories from fat.

In the low-carb diet group, 77 men and 8 women completed the study, losing 4.9 kg and 2.4 kg, respectively. This diet is based on the Atkins diet and aims to provide 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for the first 2 months, gradually increasing to 120 grams per day. Total calorie, protein, and fat intake were not restricted, but participants were advised to choose vegetarian sources of fat and protein and to avoid hydrogenated/trans fats.

All groups lost weight, with the greatest rate of weight loss occurring in the first 6 months. While men tend to lose more weight on a low-carb diet, women lose more weight on a Mediterranean diet.

However, those on the low-fat diet regained one-third of the six-month weight loss after 18 months before their weight plateaued. It was a similar experience with Atkins dieters, who regained a quarter of the five-month weight loss after 15 months before hitting a plateau.In contrast, the Mediterranean diet group lost weight rapidly over 6 months, but continue lose weight for another 6 months when their weight plateaus, and they No regain weight.
