Space Derby – How to Win at a Fun Cub Scout Activity

Last Saturday, my 8-year-old son participated in his first space derby with his Boy Scout backpack. The event was attended by many boys, parents, siblings and Scout leaders. What is Space Derby? Well, it might be a little different than you imagined.

Every Cub Scout gets a Space Derby kit with their Cub Scout package. The kit consists of balsa wood, which each participant will use to build the body of the rocket. Also in the kit is plastic material that can be cut into the rocket’s stylish fins. This is where it starts to sound a little weird. There is also a propeller in the kit. propeller? ! ! Do you think this is a rocket? Well, it’s supposed to look like a rocket, but the propeller actually propels the rocket. Scouts race four rockets at a time. The rocket hangs horizontally from the fishing line, and the propeller is powered by a rubber band that comes with the kit.

Rockets are divided into three categories: speed, beauty and ingenuity. It quickly becomes apparent that the main factor that makes a rocket fast is its weight. Since all rockets have the same power and winding, the lighter your rocket is, the faster it will go. However, if you make your rocket glow, you run the risk of structural failure when the rubber band gets tangled. So it’s a balance to have a light but strong rocket in order to have a fast rocket.

My son and I decided to enter the grooming category as it was his first space competition. We wondered how the other rockets fared in terms of speed this time around. We started gluing the two halves of balsa wood together following the instructions in the kit. Later we started making the shape of the rocket with very rough sandpaper. I later learned from some other parents that a potato peeler can magically peel away the wood from the body to get the rough shape of the rocket. Since we didn’t have this information, we used sandpaper. Once we got the basic shape we wanted, we used finer sandpaper. We switched to 400 grit and finally 800 grit.

Next we spray the rocket with primer. After the primer was completely dry, we sanded it with 800 grit sandpaper. Then we added another coat of primer and sanded again. We continue this process until the rocket body is smooth enough to our satisfaction. I have a friend who says I should use a sanding primer. With just one or two coats, the cracks in the balsa wood will be filled, he says. I have to take his word for it. I used a regular spray paint primer…the cheap stuff.

After priming and sanding, we sprayed the body with a coat of sugar apple red. When painting, there are a few tricks that can have a huge impact on the look of your finished model. Only spray paint in well-ventilated areas. It is very important to keep the spray can the correct distance from the model…about 6 inches is generally recommended. If you get too close to it, your paint job will run in; too far away and your paint job will have an orange peel effect (looks rough and dull). Keep the can moving while spraying…again, spending too much time in one spot can lead to runs and a not-so-good paint job.

When painting your rocket, you can use a coat hanger to make fuselage mounts. This keeps your hands from getting spray paint all over, and it also keeps fingerprints from getting on your fresh paint job. Make sure there is a safe place to put the end of the hanger to keep the new paint from touching anything before it dries. Allow enough time for paint to dry (30 minutes) before adding a second coat, or before touching rocket body (2 – 4 hours), depending on humidity.

After the first layer dried, we added a second layer of sugar apple red. We chrome the fins and propellers after we prime them. Since we didn’t have any decals on hand, I used silver and black markers to draw lightning bolts on the mailing labels. Then I cut out the lightning and attached it to the rocket. My wife added Captain Justin Rogers to the tail fin of one of the rockets using a fine-tipped black sharpie.

Justin’s Rockets took first place in the beauty category. He’s done a decent job with speed, but we’ll definitely be building lighter rockets next year. I hope you found some useful tips in this article for building your own space derby rocket.
