The Sedentary Lifestyle Vs The Active Lifestyle – An Endomorph’s Perspective

Why is it so easy to be a couch potato while hanging out with nothing to do? Let me rephrase this: Why is physical activity, especially vigorous physical activity, considered painful? Is perception the main issue? What if we could rewire the neural pathways in our brains to associate pleasure with strenuous physical activity (and I’m not necessarily talking about hard labor) and pain with idleness and physical laziness?

I bring up such a topic for many reasons. First, body type. It has been documented that humans can be physically classified according to their metabolic rate, as well as other important factors. These categories are: Ectomorph – Hypermetabolism; Usually scrawny personality; Finds it difficult to gain muscle; Endomorph – Contrary to Ectomorph, has a slow metabolism; Has a tendency to store body fat; Has a rounded appearance; Can gain easily muscle. Mesomorph – This body type is in between the ectomorph and endomorph. Mesoderm has the best metabolism; can gain weight easily, unlike ectomorph, or lose weight easily, unlike endomorph.

As far as size goes, endomorphs don’t have the luxury of enjoying a sedentary lifestyle. Endomorphs need to be physically and mentally active. Also, an endomorph must be very careful about his/her diet, unlike their ectomorph and mesomorph counterparts. I’m mostly speaking from personal experience as I’ve tried different workouts and diets.

I follow a passive vegan lifestyle and practice yoga and Pilates; nothing drastic. Sure, I became more flexible and could do a handstand, but my physique didn’t improve in any way when it came to cardiovascular fitness. I’m also not quite sure how to explain it, as if practicing passive, slow motion exercises reduces one’s “personal firepower”. More on that later. On a lacto-vegan lifestyle, I eat a lot of carbs but no animal protein sources other than eggs and milk. My main sources of protein back then were soy nuggets, soy burgers, soy strands, and tofu. In hindsight, I’d just stick with tofu because the Japanese have used tofu throughout their history, and it’s a fermented soy product compared to other commercial soy meat substitutes.

With no noticeable results, other than increasing my body’s supply of estrogen (which is definitely not good for a man who considers himself a man), I switched to a more active approach both in terms of diet and physical activity. I started practicing karate; Shotokan karate to be precise. Twice a week, but boy does that vigorous exercise get the oxygen going to my body and brain. My diet did include meat back then, but only to fish and chicken; absolutely no pork or beef (this was purely a matter of preference). Imagine just two to three hours of vigorous exercise over two days and my metabolism already kicking into gear.

Therefore, an ambitious next step is to increase physical activity, which will lead to increased caloric expenditure. This is done, with some interesting results.

Ultimately, it all comes down to choice. We all know the benefits of exercising regularly. (We’re not talking about showing up at the gym and pretending to work out; no, we’re talking about the type of exercise that elevates your heart rate, which increases your cardiovascular fitness). But it’s easy to get distracted and procrastinate. I used to make excuses. For over 4 years I have been making excuses that I will be going to the gym next month. 1 month becomes 2 months, then 2 becomes 4 months and so on. Every month I put off, I become more unmotivated. I ate more crap. It’s a vicious cycle because, you don’t make the decision to go, and you see fit people at the gym, and you use that as an excuse not to go.

This is where willpower comes into play. You make a decision and stick to it. You don’t have to do it alone. You can always get motivation from a friend or relative who wants to exercise and lose some excess fat. In addition, you can cut a picture from a magazine, or print a picture from the Internet of someone (athlete, celebrity, etc.) whose body is the definition of your health. Picture of me using Universal Animal Bodybuilding Supplements. I also have a poster of 27 year old bodybuilder Brandon Curry. Plus, I have a picture of a sexy fitness model in a bikini that I would love to date. Believe me, as a guy, a picture of a sexy girl in a bikini with a flat belly and a toned midsection will make you unconsciously want to suck in your gut.
