Juan Diaz – "The Baby Bull"
March 8, 2008 Diaz, 24, recently lost his WBA, WBO and IBF titles to Nate Campbell. In the loss, the first of his career, Diaz suffered a serious injury to his left eye from a headbutt, with the cut affecting Diaz’s vision throughout the bout. Diaz reported that his left eye is now fully healed after undergoing a minor surgery to increase the infection, as Diaz described to us the wound and his “stubbornness” for not giving in to his corner, causing him to lose the game. Diaz said he moved away from his usual fight plan, which involves the jab and a series of combos, and instead of Diaz staying in, Campbell was able to throw some solid shots. Two of the three judges scored Campbell, giving him a tie decision to win.
Diaz told us his next fight is scheduled for September 6, 2008 against Michael Katsidis. The game will take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, Diaz’s hometown, and the only remaining detail is for the two fighters to officially sign their contracts. This will be Diaz’s return to Houston after not fighting there in 3 years, which he sees as a huge home-court advantage. Proud to be a champion, Diaz understands the dedication it takes to reclaim the belt. Not only is Diaz committed to recapturing the title, he’s also a full-time student graduating from the University of Houston’s pre-law program in the next year or so. According to Diaz, his routine consists of waking up early and going straight to the 24/7 health center, where he starts the day with weight training, then swimming, and then off to college, which Diaz is so obsessed with graduating , he even took summer classes. In the evening, Diaz will hit the gym again, wrapping up the day with a workout in the stairwell. This daily workout routine, which is different from the average boxer’s workout plan, was devised by his strength and conditioning trainer, Brian Caldwell. As it all went on, Diaz found time to study to maintain good grades, and after graduation Diaz, a Mexican-American, planned to attend law school. He eventually wants to get involved in immigration law or sports contracts. Diaz, along with former Mexican boxing champion and Hall of Famer Carlos Palomino, will be one of the few champion boxers with a college degree. In fact, Palomino fought Armando Muniz on January 21, 1977, the first time the two college-educated boxers fought for a world title.
Diaz started boxing at the age of 8 and had a successful amateur career with a record of 105 wins and 5 losses, but he was banned from representing the Mexican national team in 2000 because he was underage. Not wanting to wait another four years, Diaz turned pro and won his first professional fight on June 23, 2000 at the age of 16 with a first-round knockout victory over Rafael Ortiz. Since his first fight, Diaz has won 32 fights and is 33-1. Diaz will now look to regain his winning ways against tough Michael Cassidis of Australia’s Toowoomba. Katsidis (23 -1) (20KO’s) is also coming off his first loss, a 10th-round knockout by Joel Casamayor. Diaz said he’s already started working on Katsidis’ film and developing a top-notch game plan with his long-term training team or Ronnie Fields and Derwin Richards. Diaz, devastated by the loss of his championship belt, understands that he most looks forward to and needs to continue his career. A victory over Katsidis will return him to a lightweight title fight that, in addition to Campbell and Casamayor, also includes budding talents Anthony Peterson and Amir Khan.
After taking on Nate Campbell, Diaz switched promoters from Don King to Oscar De La Hoya’s golden boy. Juan said his transition is better now that he has promoters who care about their fighters and guide them to the right game. The Golden Boy unmasked Diaz during Joe Calzaghe’s match against Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas on April 19. Diaz participated in weigh-ins and shared the stage with many great fighters and celebrities. When legendary ring announcer Michael Buffett announced every celebrity who took the stage, Diaz was sure to remind Buffett of declaring him Juan Diaz “Little Bull.” Diaz is a true “little bull” with an undisputed work ethic and a never-give-up attitude “Mavericks” are on the right track in life.
