Exclusive – Interview With Brenda Watson – Author of The Fiber 35 Diet
I recently interviewed Ms. Brenda Watson CNC about her new book, The Fiber 35 Diet. She is a very knowledgeable individual with a strong background in alternative medicine.
KJ: Why did you write Fiber 35 Diet?
BW: Fiber 35 Diet is my fourth book. Before it was published, I was a self-published author with a special focus on digestive disorders with Dr. Leonard Smith.
I’ve always known the benefits of fiber in the diet. Between the ages of 42 and 48 I gained weight despite my natural remedies.
BW: A diet rich in fiber has been found to be best. I eat too much protein. As a result, I’ve done a ton of research on fiber intake. People don’t count fiber. Dr. Dennis Burkett traveled to Africa to study African diets, which included 60-80 grams of fiber per day. Native people there have no digestive problems, no hemorrhoids, heart disease, varicose veins, bowel disease, diverticulitis, diabetes… Americans need to count their fiber intake.
BW: The average fiber supplement provides 3-5 grams. I have never eaten whole grains. So, I started counting the grams of fiber I was eating.
Good health requires 35 grams. A study from the University of California showed that more CCK was produced after eating high-fiber foods, just like eating high-fat foods.
My personal adventure has become the Fiber Flush Effect. Fiber Flush is based on an average of 7 calories burned per gram of fiber consumed. The average American consumes 10 to 12 grams of fiber per day and consumes about 70-84 calories. This needs to be increased to 35 grams of fiber per day. Fewer calories are absorbed this way.
BW: I also made the mistake of not weighing myself. It’s good to do this once or twice a week.
KJ: I rarely do that myself.
BW: You need to get a baseline of calories per unit of body weight to know how much you need to eat. You can determine your calorie intake needs by following the formula in the Fiber 35 Diet book. I also outline the daily amount of exercise needed to burn calories. However, the main thing is to count the grams of fiber and not the calories.
It is also very important to read the labels of the foods you buy. Don’t buy foods with less than 3 grams of fiber per serving. For example, whole wheat wraps should typically contain 3-7 grams of fiber. Multigrain doesn’t always mean whole grains.
KJ: Who do you think your typical reader is?
BW: Women, 35 and over
KJ: What do you think are the major health problems facing Americans due to lack of fiber?
BW: $120 billion a year is spent on healthcare for digestive problems.
More fiber means less: Heart attacks, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease, and more.
KJ: You stated in your presentation that 35 grams of fiber per day can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.
Fiber 35 – What does 35 grams of fiber a day look like?
Breakfast – 7 grams of oranges, 8 grams of steel cut oats instead of regular oats
Lunch – 10g salad of romaine lettuce, spinach, walnuts, chickpeas and chicken
Snack – 4g hummus (2t) with celery and carrots, or flax crackers
Dinner – salmon, 11g acorn squash and kale
Total fiber is about 35 grams to 40 grams.
KJ: It’s easy!
BW: People need choices. Health food stores will stock shakes with fiber and protein, as well as some high-quality fiber bars.
KJ: What is our best source of fiber?
BW: Raw vegetables and whole grains. Read labels. People with digestive disorders lightly steam vegetables.
KJ: Which foods are our enemies?
BW: Sugar and processed foods.
KJ: Not too long ago, cancer was the worst word I heard every day. Today, it’s an everyday phrase. From your perspective, what is the most “to do” thing to avoid cancer?
BW: Detox and eat an organic, plant-based diet. Specific programs should be followed using herbal, detox, water, fiber and infrared saunas. Infrared saunas are widely used in clinics by holistic practitioners and are very safe. Infrared saunas produce radiant heat, and the heat causes sweating; the patient sweats out heavy metals and other toxins.
KJ: From what I understand, you yourself struggled with health issues a few years ago.
BW: About 20 years ago. I became interested in natural remedies and became a colon hydrotherapist.
In 1990 I started a clinic apprenticeship and from 1993 to 1998 I owned 5 holistic clinics.
KJ: I heard that you are also a naturopathic doctor. How are naturopaths different from the mainstream medical establishment?
BW: Research herbal and nutraceuticals, ie. vitamins and antioxidants.
KJ: Are you part of alternative medicine?
BW: Yes, Dr. Leonard Smith, an associate professor at the University of Miami, and I worked together during the holistic movement. Our goal is to educate patients using a holistic approach.
KJ: Has alternative medicine gone mainstream?
BW: Yes, but the media is still lagging behind on this. In New York City, for example, there is a general lack of awareness in the media.
KJ: Consumers today recognize that organic food is superior to food that has been treated with pesticides. Some people can’t afford organics. Any suggestions for this group?
BW: Buy laundry detergent for fruit and vegetables; use natural household products like vinegar and baking soda.
A study called Toxic Body Burden was done using volunteers. The average number of toxins in the human body is 91. Our bodies don’t detox as well as we think they do.
Recently, California enacted a law to phase out the dry cleaning solvent perchlorethylene (perc). These chemicals are known carcinogens and have been linked to bladder, esophagus and other cancers. Several people who lived above the dry cleaner fell ill and an investigation was opened.
KJ: How much research did you put into writing the Fiber 35 Diet?
BW: 2 years worth
KJ: The book says that a person goes through three stages. Phases 1 and 2 lose weight through eating fiber and exercising. Phase 3 is the Lifetime Maintenance Program.
How long will Phase 1 and Phase 2 take?
BW: Phase 1 lasts about 1-2 weeks and Phase 2 takes about 1 month.
Nobody goes below 1200 calories.
KJ: Are colon cleanses necessary? If so, why?
BW: Not always, it is only necessary if a person is constipated. A person needs to have a bowel movement every day, and it goes very well.
When constipation occurs, I recommend a 7 or 14 day cleanse. Constipation can affect your ability to lose weight. It slows down the metabolic rate, which can lead to overeating and lead to self-intoxication (self-intoxication).
KJ: In a nutshell, what sets your weight loss book apart from others?
BW: The Fiber 35 Diet is comprehensive, not a fad, involves solid research, and is simple. Most meals can be prepared in less than 30 minutes, and I provide a weekly grocery list. this is very simple.
Lifestyle is just as important as exercise.
In my PBS special, I highlight a 20-minute Up and Down Workout DVD for a full-body workout. The same procedure is also in the Fiber 35 Diet book. It uses resistance bands and can be used by anyone with neck and back problems.
KJ: Thank you, Brenda, and I wish you great success with your new book, The Fiber 35 Diet.
BW: Thank you.
