While young people may find it hard to believe, Americans don’t always understand Eastern philosophies and practices. Yoga has been known in the West for many years, but only to a few.
It wasn’t until the Beatles started meditating and flew to India to study under Mararesh Mahesh Yogi that people started to wake up.
When I bought the paperback of this book, yoga was still a weird discipline and I didn’t talk about it with my friends. But I like to read about queer subjects, and I’ve finished reading ESP/occult books at my small town public library before moving on to non-Christian books.
The author begins with his personal story. He was weak and sickly when he was a child, and he contracted many diseases. He apparently survived only because his father was a doctor. At the age of 15, he studied Hatha Yoga with a master.
After a few months, his body became strong, flexible and muscular. He no longer suffers from disease. He left India and founded a famous yoga school in Switzerland. This book is part of his efforts to bring the teachings of Yoga to the West.
He introduced Hatha Yoga as a discipline that creates health by bringing greater awareness to our bodies.
The ancient yogis did not intend to practice for the sake of practice. They only know that sickly people cannot focus on higher spirituality, so bring them health first. Keep in mind that the people of India will suffer even more than they are now from food shortages, poor housing conditions and infectious diseases. For one thing, smallpox wasn’t eradicated until around 1978, so countless people died from it.
However, those of us who are not seeking a higher spiritual awareness can also use Hatha Yoga for greater health and this book is a great introduction. This is what I’ve used for years, doing plows and headstands in my bedroom as a kid.
The chapter “Every Illness Has a Psychological Cause” was well ahead of its time, yet advances in science have just confirmed its thesis that negative thoughts weaken the body.
Women don’t wear tight girdles anymore, but we all need these chapters to remind us to take a deep breath for optimal health.
He describes asana (body positions) and pranayama (breathing exercises) in a way that a 12-year-old can understand. I know because I was twelve when I first read them.
And there are plenty of photos to illustrate what these poses look like when done correctly.
Finally, he gave a 21-week timeline to follow.
There’s a chapter dedicated to slow-motion exercises in front of a mirror to help you visualize your growing muscles. During these movements, you tense the muscles as much as possible.
While I’ve never practiced this regularly, some fitness gurus swear by it, like John E. Peterson.
All in all, this book is still a great introduction to yoga. It might be better to take a class taught by a good teacher, but if there aren’t any classes in your area or don’t have the time or money to take one, you can’t go wrong with yoga and wellness.
