Myth #1 – Diet has nothing to do with height – While we naturally associate diet with weight gain, few people think that diet has any effect on height. This is not true because a person’s diet can affect their height.
Our bodies need a lot of resources to function to their full potential, and a diet rich in protein, vitamins, calcium, magnesium and water will all promote healthy growth.
Fat intake, on the other hand, should be reduced because fat blocks the release of growth hormone, not to mention adding extra pounds and making you look shorter than you really are.
Myth #2 – Smoking – From a myth/fact perspective, things get very blurry. The split is pretty even with this one, as many people swear that smoking makes you shorter, as many say it’s nothing more than an old wives tale. So, is this fact or fantasy?
Well… this one is debatable, hence why the two sides are still so evenly divided. Numerous tests have been performed, but there is no conclusive evidence that smoking stunts growth. Whether this was because the test subjects were out of their growth spurt is uncertain.
In fact, smoking releases harmful and invasive toxins into your body that negatively affect most bodily functions they come into contact with. Maybe it doesn’t directly inhibit growth, especially if the smoking starts after the aforementioned growth spurt, but it certainly won’t help.
Myth #3 – Exercise doesn’t increase height – On the face of it, this is easy to believe. After all, how could simple stretching possibly increase one’s height? This must be a myth, right?
It’s not like this. Numerous studies have proven that regular and targeted stretching of the legs and spine can add two or more inches to height, even in adults who are unlikely to grow taller on their own.
Besides these, many other myths exist. Never believe something the first time you hear it, not even the hundredth time. Only after carefully examining both sides of each story can you draw your own conclusions, either way.
