Developing a College or University Mace
Colleges and universities often use “mace” to connect the institution’s customs with the best traditions of higher education dating back to the first universities founded in the Middle Ages.
The scepter symbolizes authority, learning and scholarship, history, reputation and values. It connotes remembrance, grace, honor, splendor, purpose, quality, gravitas, stability, and continuity.
During my tenure as president of Cornerstone University, we developed a mace for the university. While the product we strive for is beautiful, the result is by no means guaranteed during development, as we are forced to learn through trial and error. We found articles on the history and significance of the Academic Scepter, but no useful “how-to” content. It is the purpose of this article to help you through the process.
First, your president should endorse the effort, ideally with enthusiasm. His or her leadership can smooth out bumps in a process that would take months or even years.
Second, identify a Mace development coordinator. The importance of who this person is and the vision, talent, and work ethic he or she brings to the task cannot be overemphasized. The project needs a backer because the president has neither the time nor the expertise to support it. Developing a unique mace requires a unique combination of knowledge and skills: art, philosophy, administration, politics. Identifying a highly regarded coordinator who possesses these talents and “gets things done” is key to success. I found a retired music professor emeritus who was eager to continue contributing. She is a godsend.
Third, take the time to carefully study the history of the University Mace, the styles of Mace used at universities around the world, the artistry and symbolism of the Mace’s craft, and the types of scholarly activities in which the College Mace has emerged. Maybe visit other colleges and universities to see their maces and learn how those maces were developed. Only after completing this review can you begin the long process of sketching in which the mace’s shape, size and evolved symbols can be visualized and evaluated. It’s an iterative experience. You embrace rather than discard a set of “big ideas.” Metal and wood. Philosophy and practice. Academic, athletic, regional or national image? Length or height, weight. Precious gems and metals? cost. Maces range from inexpensive functional parts to unique, “priceless” pieces of art.
Fourth, at this juncture, we have found it helpful to share progress reports with staff and selected constituents and solicit their feedback. We work closely with three or four professors whose expertise in philosophy, academic tradition, and the history of our university saves us from inadvertent misstatements. Throughout the process, as President, the Mace Coordinator kept me informed on a regular basis, which allowed me to contribute ideas and connect projects with the right backers. We found that this temporary exposure also generated interest and excitement for the project.
Fifth, if appropriate, tie your mace to the traditions of your institution, not just symbolically. For example, find a piece of wood or metal that was taken from the original campus or the old main campus and include this element in your mace design. Our institution was started by the church’s religious leaders, so we reached out to the church’s current leaders to ask for their help. They generously presented the University with a piece of original oak, which our wood carver used to create part of the University seal on the mace. This element is not only beautiful, but emotional and full of meaning, paying homage to our ancestors and reminding our students that college was not born yesterday. Those who attended the chapel were warmed by the university’s remembrance.
Sixth, once you have at least roughly determined the material and possible design of your mace, the next step is to find a craftsman or woman with superior artistic and technical skills capable of making a collegiate mace of the level of excellence you have Require. We made our mace out of Honduran mahogany and it’s amazing to have a very skilled and fast wood carver in our city. Precious stones were donated and installed by local jewelers. A nearby fine furniture business donated and completed our mace with a polished lacquer finish that accentuates the mace’s intricately carved features and preserves the natural tone of the wood. Both local architects and sculptors contributed their design expertise. A local carpenter crafted and contributed a Michigan cherry wood armature along with a black marble base to create the base of the mace. I recommend that you prioritize local artisans to foster exchange, preserve local character, and boost voter engagement. Who you choose can also affect the time it will take to complete the project.
Seventh, as the Mace development project nears completion, write a set of standards for when and how to display the Mace. Remember, to develop your institution’s tradition by associating a certain aura with your mace, you have to approach it in a special way. Consider these guidelines: the mace should be used at all official ceremonies, and only at official ceremonies (not borrowed for fraternity parties or athletic tournaments); the mace bearer should be chosen based on his or her achievements, This is a noble position; the bearer of the mace should wear white gloves to show grace and maintain the finish of the mace; the mace should lead all processions and exits; dignified position. You may also wish to designate a mace trustee who will take care of the mace before and after the event, including delivering the mace to the speaker event location and returning it to the Office of the President after the event. Appointing Mace trustees is a practical matter, but it also provides the University with another opportunity to involve individuals in the University’s solemn tradition.
Eighth, the University Scepter shall be kept in the Chancellor’s Office, which shall be responsible for its safekeeping and display. Institutions keep their maces elsewhere, but I believe the Oval Office residence reinforces the symbolic authority bestowed on the mace, sort of like the city key to the mayor’s office.
Ninth, when we lifted the veil on the mace, I can say that all the funds needed to develop the mace were donated by friends at the university. This comment is always popular with faculty and CFOs alike.
Tenth, and finally, when your mace is finished, I would suggest a mace commissioning ceremony in the fall, or perhaps a special rally. When you display and explain the symbolism of the scepter, you are celebrating the institution’s values and growing prestige.
The collegiate mace we developed was quickly accepted as a signature addition to the collegiate tradition. Those who bore it spoke of the credit given to them. It connects us with those who came before us and those who come after us, in pursuit of learning. Like great art, it moves us. It is university.
