Unusual Places and Things to Eat in Mexico City
You travel to try new things and have new experiences, right? So, why not stretch your palate while traveling? While in Mexico City you can truly experience the “exotic” of dining, you don’t have to delve into the oddities. Deviate a little from your usual path with these suggestions. If you want to try something a little different when dining out in Mexico City, try these.
Here are two restaurants that specialize in cevicherias, or raw seafood:
Marisco Pipiribao
Parma 31
historical center
Hosteria Las Palmas Hotels
Parma No. 30-A
historical center
Ceviche is raw fish or seafood marinated in lime juice, with vegetables and spices somewhat chemically “cooked” by acid. Usually eaten chilled, it is a staple in many Latin countries, especially in seaports. Seafood cocktails and Caldos de Mariscos are the specialty here. The Las Palmas restaurant’s specialty is the “Vuelve a La Vida” ($60 pesos), consisting of fish, octopus, crab, shrimp and oysters, sure to “bring you back to life.” Other marinated seafood cocktails in sundae glasses cost around 30 pesos to choose from. Another famous specialty is the stuffed crab in the shell, priced at 35 pesos. This is a unique experience, check it out.
Want to try sushi?
Is that Japanese sushi or Mexican sushi? No, it’s just a Mexican joke, but you can try everything you can see at these two restaurants. Later, you can learn how to make your own sushi rolls.
Mount Teriyaki
Republica de Uruguay No. 71 Local 2
historical center
5510-9971, 5510-9556
A “fast food” style Japanese restaurant, their selection is a bit limited but readily available and reasonably priced. You can choose from some good-value pre-packaged combos. The staff are Mexican so you lose a bit in translation. The setting is typical “fast food” style, despite being conveniently located in the heart of the shopping district of the Republic of Uruguay.

5 de Mayo
Centro Historico Metro: Allende
An authentic Japanese sushi bar where you serve sliced raw or marinated seafood, rice and vegetables that transform into aromatic, colorful treats before your eyes. Prices range from $10 per piece to $60 or $70 for mixed platters. It gets very crowded at lunchtime, so come early or late and evenings are less crowded. If you are really ready to experience the real thing and have a unique experience at a price you can afford then I would recommend here.
…eating vegan Vittles?
(…and we’re not just talking about “rabbit food” here)
Vegetariano Filomeno Mata Restaurant
Filomeno Mata No.
historical center
5521 – 1895
If you haven’t tried vegetarian food, why not give it a try here, where the main course selection is extensive and delicious, such as Aguacate and Tomate Relleno, Papa al Horno con Cebollitas Aztecas and Croquettas de Elote con Puree de Papaya. As an old school “meat and potatoes” person, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious entrées on the menu here. Open Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm and Sunday 9am to 7pm. Soft pop music plays in the background while you dine, thanks to a live keyboardist most days morning and evening. A truly pleasing touch.
Two other vegan spots are:
Vegetarian and Diet
Madero 56 Altos
historical center
5521-6880
vegetarian romanes
Tuxpan 24
Colonia Rome
5564-7930
los magueyes
Palma 10-A (between 5 de Mayo and Tacuba)
historical center
5518-4073, 5521-5191
The waitress put a plate on the table in front of me. A hunk of roast beef sits next to a pool of gravy-colored refried beans. A hearty green salad of tomato, lettuce, shredded carrots, and cucumber fills one side of the plate, but it’s the beef topping that’s intriguing. The slender dark green strips have a slightly pungent aroma mixed with bright red peppers. A small steaming mound of tortillas fills the saucer next to it. So this is “Beefsteak con Nopales”. Agave is a succulent plant. If your plant has rust, that means it’s a cactus. Nopales are a staple here and, as you might expect, many dishes like Nopales Au Grautin and Costilla con Nopales feature them. The young cactus ears are harvested, washed and shaved off spines and spines before being roasted or fried. The value-for-money entrees here range from $21.50 to $42.50 pesos. Some restaurants and “Taquerias” make them into dishes to bring out their unique flavor. They can also be juiced and blended with other fruit and vegetable juices for delicious, healthy drinks. drink up!
Dulceria de Celaya
May 39th
Centro Historico Metro: Allende
5521 – 1787
If it’s sweet bunky, they’ve probably figured it out. (Well, not me, but candied fruits and veggies, yes.) If they don’t have it, you can order it and they’ll prepare or make it for you. Boasting 125 years in business, the glass-enclosed shop stocks everything from baskets to specialty sweets and sweets. The window display alone is enough to pique your interest. Try candied yucca or pumpkin – amazing! Products are sold by weight, so you can order as much as you need. An absolute “must stop” on your “alternative Mexico City” trip. Your sweet tooth will thank you, thank you, thank you. enjoy!

San Camilito Food Market
As soon as I stepped in the entrance I started yelling, “Here sir! We have the best”, “What do you want? We have it here!” “Do you like the best home cooking? Try ours, It’s ready now. You won’t regret it!” “Our ham is made by my mother. It’s so tender that I almost cry when I eat it.” A dozen cooks and gallows attacked me at the same time. Everyone is trying to lure me to eat at their restaurants. Everything looks fine. Everything smells great. They are very persistent. they beg. they begged. they begged. When all that doesn’t work, they coax if given the time. “You’re missing out on the best food on the market!” “You should be eating here, now you’re getting heartburn!” Welcome to Mercado de Alimentos San Camilito, located on the side of lively Garibaldi Square. I settled in at the seafood stand in Norberto Uscanga Ortiz for Arroz con Pulpo (seasoned rice mixed with chunks of octopus for 20 pesos), Mojarra frito (fried Mojarra – a type of fish) and a mixed tomato, lettuce and avocado salad, A small piece of freshly baked bread (38 pesos for the platter) and a couple of almost frozen Coronas (10 pesos) to wash down the whole thing.
An hour and a half later, I staggered out of there, watching Eleven Mariachi and three good stories by Norberto, a fed and happy man. When you go, please give him my regards. You’ll enjoy some of the best seafood platters in town.
