Lessons From Athletes – How to Be Great in Your Field

Do you really stop and think about what makes a great athlete, really great?

I mean, why are there so few truly super great athletes in sports? What is it that takes them from mediocrity to brilliance? How the hell are we going to get it? What can we even gain? Are we crazy enough to believe we can be considered a great athlete?

Having spent nearly half of my adult life playing professional sports in my husband’s Major League Baseball, I thought I had some interesting insights that could help us mere mortals either reach our full potential or realize our greatness Possibly more limited than our hopes. But even with the most enviable ways to achieve greatness, each has potential pitfalls.

Greatness is born. While working with a group of 12-year-olds, I realized that the affinity for real sports is very evident in young children. It has to do with how their bodies are constructed and how they move. Everything you teach them comes quickly and easily. The reason there is so much potential is that these lucky individuals start a head above mere mortals. Finding sports to apply these skills to is often the hardest part, because they love and are good at everything! The good part – they are inherently good and athletes are usually stars at everything, the bad part is that there is laziness and the potential to rely on their talent and not put in the effort.

Greatness is developed. That means recruiting an above-average athlete and giving them some attention and specialized training for their sport. By providing many opportunities to participate in the sport and apply the curriculum, athletes can develop higher levels of ability and achievement. The good part – making athletes better through skill and training The bad part – potential burnout, especially if they are not allowed to explore and challenge themselves in other athletic ways.

Greatness is to be expected. These athletes have always been told and taught that just being the best is enough and winning is everything. For many, it’s a lifelong quest, always to be the best at everything they do. Really, they don’t understand any other way because it’s drilled into them like manners or Southern charm. The good part – their unwavering determination… the bad part – the house of cards just needs to get messed up and in their perfectionistic way it will collapse.

Greatness is supported. This is huge! The truth is, while we may see this incredible athlete run a world record mile, score a winning goal or lift the greatest weight ever lifted, no winning athlete does it alone. They all have one or more trainers, someone to maintain their bodies, someone to help them with the mind game, handle their equipment, manage travel plans. Behind every great athlete is a group of supportive people (or family) who play an important role in the athlete’s success. The good part – every possible weakness is supported, the bad part – consider the resources needed!

Greatness is conceived and believed. I think this is the most powerful one, and the one most of us can take advantage of without limitation or cost. It’s a deep-seated, almost physical sense of exactly where athletes are going, what they’re going to accomplish, and how they feel when they do it. It’s like a movie they’ve seen and remembered so well that they can’t tell where their dreams end and reality begins. A man may lack all previous sources of greatness, but to all who have dreams, faith is free. This becomes the compass for all athletes’ training, diet, learning and relationships, serving as their North Star. I bet if you asked the most accomplished athletes in the world how strong their belief and vision of success was, you would be blown away by the intensity of this source of greatness. The good part – anyone at any level can use it to achieve excellence in any field or endeavor. The bad part – maybe our vision didn’t match reality the first time we tried it. But the beauty is that this component will always be in the process of being perfected, which will always push us forward.

In the end, that’s what some of us might actually get. Let your dreams and vision for your life be your North Star starting today. It was put into you for a reason, and that reason was to keep you from your greatness!
