5 Golf Driving Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Drives
To get the most out of your drives, you need to generate clubhead speed.
This means you have to have a full shoulder, proper weight transfer, and your upper and lower body must be working in a synchronized manner.
When the shoulders turn correctly and transfer the weight, you get distance. When your lower body and upper body work in unison, you not only get distance, you get accuracy.
Below are 5 golf tips to get the most out of your drives:
1.) Make a smooth transition– To achieve maximum clubhead speed, you must have a smooth transition during the swing. It starts with a one-piece carry, which should start with your shoulders and arms rotating back toward each other. Think of it like swinging the hand of a grandfather clock. (One smooth movement).
2.) Curl your lower body– During the backswing, you must create tension in the lower body. It’s kind of like coiling a rubber band where your hips rotate and your legs stay pulled. You will have a slight bend in the knee forward, but the back leg will remain firmly planted.
3.) Start at the sides– Your forward swing will begin by rotating your hips back to square and beyond. Your shoulders and arms will follow this movement.
It is very important that you allow your hips to rotate past the square and open up as you move forward to allow room for your arms and hands as you track. During this movement you will actually slide your hips slightly towards the target.
4.) Weight shift– This is important when you start your forward movement with your hips, you will also want to shift your weight to your front leg. In effect, you place the front foot firmly back on the ground and create a pivot point for the rest of the body to rotate.
5.) Roll your wrists– When you bring your club face back into the ball straight, your finishing motion will allow your wrist to spin through the final part of your follow through. That doesn’t mean you’ll break your wrist. Instead, as you complete the swing, your arms will roll over and your right hand will be on top of your left hand (right-handed golfer, vice versa for lefties).
Try this exercise to help improve shoulder rotation:
Take a normal attitude towards the driver. Place the golf ball in the back armpit and take a normal swing. If you start your backswing correctly, the ball will stay firmly tucked in your armpit. If you start with your arms alone, then the ball will fall to the ground.
Practicing this simple exercise will help you get a feel for proper takeout. Once you have this down, it’s just a matter of following the rest of the golf driving tips above. This will certainly put you on the path to more distance from your units.
