Bottle Feeding: Is Baby Getting Too Much?
Recent research links obesity in adults to overfeeding bottled milk in infancy. So, are you giving your baby too much milk?
If you bottle feed your baby, it’s easy to see how much your baby is getting. The manufacturer provides instructions on how to make the formula and how much milk the baby should have. The guidelines prescribe feeding amounts for infants of a certain age and weight. So why are bottle-fed babies at greater risk of being overweight?
The biggest reason for excess weight gain is that parents ignore the baby’s signs that enough is enough. Breastfeeding mothers are taught to follow in their baby’s footsteps. Breastfeeding mothers are taught to offer breast milk when their baby needs it and to stop breastfeeding when they see signs that their baby is full. Mothers who choose to bottle-feed rarely, if ever, get this advice. Instead, moms feel obligated to follow the directions printed on the side of the container. But guides are not for every child; every child is unique and different. He believes this may be due to overfeeding. “With a bottle-fed baby, the mother can suppress her baby by urging him to finish the bottle,” he explains. “Mom needs to respond to baby’s cues.” When babies are constantly overeating beyond the point of fullness, they may in time learn to ignore “full cues.” Plus, for most babies, drinking milk isn’t just about nutrition; it’s about comfort. So some babies will often nurse even when they are not hungry.
Mothers must heed the signs that the baby is full. But what signs should bottle-feeding moms look for? First, follow the advice for breastfeeding mothers. This means giving your baby 10 or 12 sucks, then removing the bottle, then allowing him another 10 or 12 sucks, then another break, and so on. This rhythm is especially important for newborns and less so after about four months. During these breaks, keep the nipple out of your baby’s mouth, as you may accidentally press it against your baby’s palate. If your baby doesn’t open her mouth to reach for the bottle after one of these breaks, she’s probably finished. Watch your baby’s mouth as she drinks. If your baby’s mouth is loose or loose so that she’s no longer actively sucking, she’s done drinking. If you are concerned about your baby’s weight, you should see your doctor right away.
