Art Therapy – A Form of Anger Management
Art therapy has long been considered a therapeutic process for mood disorders and anxiety disorders. Van Gogh stopped some of his demons through art. Recently, therapists have reported high success rates in using creative and artistic expression to deal with anger, depression, and distress.
Take Carla P., who recovered from 15 years of severe depression through art therapy. She claims taking creative arts classes saved her life. Although the medication relieved some symptoms, it also added 35 pounds, which made her feel old and fat. She then began looking for alternative avenues of treatment. At the suggestion of a friend, Kara signed up for an art therapy class, although she didn’t initially think it would help her.
She enjoyed the session so much she returned the following week. Within 6 weeks, Kara noticed a dramatic improvement in her sleep. She tossed and turned less frequently at night; she also noticed a more positive sense of well-being. Little things don’t bother her so much as her mind is preoccupied with planning her next art project.
She reported feeling optimistic. In fact, she felt so good that she started walking every morning before work and lost 10 pounds in three months. Satisfied with her progress, her doctor reduced her medication dose.
Kara now believes that her drawing lessons helped her deal with the immeasurable feelings of anger that had plagued her for 20 years. Claiming the sessions changed her negative thought patterns, she called art therapy an anger management class.
She is right.
In Art Therapy and Anger, contributor art psychotherapist Leila Moules describes her success using art to work with children with ODD. She uses art to help these children “look inside” so they can gain some control over their behavioral problems. Essentially, her therapy process was a toolkit to help them fix their anger.
