How Many Hours Do You Need To Sleep?
Sleep is an important factor in everyone’s life. You get rest, and your body regains the energy and strength you lost while you were sleeping. Your mind will also be calmer, leaving you refreshed for the next day’s work. Sleeping more or less will definitely show in next day productivity, mental capacity, weight gain and loss, sharpness and alertness, creativity and emotional state. It has long been observed that when you don’t get the required number of hours of sleep, you tend to score lower on all of these physical, mental and emotional factors. But if, instead, you are able to sleep at the prescribed time, you tend to be more active and alert.
So how much sleep do you really need? The answer actually depends on many factors. Some of these factors include the types of activities you do during the day and your body composition. But the main factor in determining how much sleep you should be getting is your age.
Newborns should sleep about 18 hours by the second month. Then, as they go into their first year, the range decreases to 14 or 15 hours. Toddlers between the ages of 1 and 3 need about 12 to 14 hours of sleep. This number drops to 11 to 13 as they grow to 5 years old. Conversely, children ages 5 to 12 get about 10 to 11 hours, and teens ages 12 to 18 get 8.5 to 10 hours. Adults need less sleep, ranging from 7.5 to 9 hours.
You’ll notice that as your body matures and becomes more proficient at responding to environmental and physiological changes, it requires less sleep. Young people, on the other hand, need more sleep to allow their bodies to change and adjust.
Given how sleep affects and impacts your body, it’s important to know how much sleep you’re getting each night. Again, the more important point is not just how many hours you sleep, but the quality of rest you get. Deep sleep for the right number of hours is definitely better than restless sleep for a longer period of time. To fully understand the importance of sleep, talk to your doctor.
