Judo and Setting Goals
“Dreams are where realities come true.” I don’t know who said this, but I really like this quote. I like the fact that some people’s dreams, they have come true. Yes, they worked for it, but they had a dream, they chased it and they made it happen.
What is your dream or goal?
– buy a car
– pass university exams
– win state competition
– lose a few pounds
– gain some muscle
– Bring a black belt to your club in training next week (or next year)
– Become a world champion
– Learn Nage no Kata
– Learn new settings of Ippon Seoi Nage
Goal setting is a fundamental aspect of life and so is judo. It’s good to have a goal and work towards it. Goals can be big or small, long term or short term, but I believe you must always have a goal, a dream or a vision.
When I was 13, my longtime dream was to compete in the Olympics.
In order to achieve my dream, I had to work hard and achieve many short-term goals along the way. Some of these short-term goals include:
– Develop powerful striker techniques
– Has a powerful Ne Waza transition
– representing the state team
– Representing the national team
– Win a few battles in the high ranks
– Start a Judo-specific fitness program
– Control your opponent’s sleeve.
By setting short-, medium-, and long-term goals, you’ll never feel like your goals are out of reach. This is because you are constantly working towards something.
What are your long-term judo goals as a recreational or competitive judo athlete? What are your short-term judo goals?
Think about what it is you really want to achieve as a judoka. Don’t just think about your goals, write them down. Many successful people, whether in sports or business, have at one point or another written down their goals. By doing this, you have identified what you want to achieve and that’s when the journey begins.
Talk to your coach, trainer or training partner to get a clear idea of what you want to achieve or improve in your judo competition.
Once you identify your goals, I believe your training will become more meaningful and you will have a clearer idea of what you are looking for from Judo.
If you’re lacking motivation or inspiration, I recommend taking a few days off because you don’t want to burn out or overtrain. On your days off, do things you might not have had the chance to do, like a movie night or hanging out with family and friends. After a few days off, you may be eager to get back into training.
