Part of Me: Mrs. Cornfield

Fear is an emotion that holds us back. It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to lose weight, change careers, leave your spouse, break up with your boyfriend, start a new school, go to college, or introduce yourself to your neighbors. Fear doesn’t discriminate; it doesn’t care how old you are, what color you are, what gender you are, or what religion you are. We have all faced fear at one time or another. As a kid growing up in foster care and alcoholism, fear was an emotion I had to learn to control.

In fifth grade, I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Cornfield. We live in the countryside outside of Twin Bridges, Montana, and Mrs. Cornfield lives across the road. Mrs. Cornfield is an elderly lady who takes care of her terminally ill husband. On a Saturday afternoon, my siblings and I, eager to get to know our neighbor, crossed the dirt road, took a few deep breaths, and knocked on her door. Within minutes, a small, vulnerable woman with a smile and a twinkle in her eye opened the door and invited us into her country house.

The four of us introduced ourselves and she asked if we wanted some cookies and a Kool-Aid. Of course, we said yes. Then she took a book off the table, held it up and asked if we wanted her to read the Bible. We all nodded yes. She then asked if we would like to study the Bible with her on Saturday. We said yes! Then she explained tithing.

During the week, each of us will try to earn pennies, nickels and dimes for Saturday Bible School. Every Saturday after lunch we would walk across the country lane and knock on her door, and she would greet her with a smile. Mrs. Cornfield would line us up in a circle and we’d listen to her read from the Bible. She would hold up her collecting plate, pass it to the person on the right, and we would place the coins we collected on her plate. Whether it’s a penny or a hundred. Every penny counts. And, most importantly, we know we matter. Every Saturday after our Bible class, she would give us cookies and Kool-Aids.

As Mrs. Cornfield helped us overcome our fears of abandonment, abuse, and alcoholism, we helped her overcome her greatest fear: her husband dying of cancer. We found strength in God every Saturday afternoon as we prayed together in a circle and raised our Kool-Aid glasses in thanks. To this day, all four of us talk about Mrs. Cornfield and her kindness and the lessons she taught us. The world could certainly use more Mrs. Cornfields. Helen Steiner Rice wrote: “What more can we ask of our Savior than to know that we are never alone? His mercy and love are everlasting, and he makes us all His problems become his own” (Hope Springs Eternal, 1978).

So what does this have to do with fear? It’s simple: Realize that even if you have to run away from home in the middle of the night, you’re never alone. If you search, if you ask, there will be someone in your life who will help you find the courage to overcome your greatest fear. Maybe her name will be Mrs. Cornfield.

Exercise: open a door

Alexander Graham Bell once said: “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look too long at the closed door to see the one that is open for us.”

Today, it’s really ugly. Do some deep self-reflection. Take advantage of the great minds you have been endowed with. Think of all those doors that have already been slammed shut. Go away and don’t look back. Open your eyes, literally open them, and see how many doors there are for you to step through. choose one. Knocked on the door and walked in. Give yourself permission to go where you want to go, meet people you want to meet, and go on adventures. Just knock on the door. knock on the door.

Create these places, these people, and these adventures through imagination. Every goal, every dream begins in the mind. Circle the letter or statement of your choice.
