On Resistance and Cats – How Hard Do You Resist Change?
I had to take my senior cat to the vet. He didn’t like being there, and I was surprised by how docile he was when the assistant weighed and took his temperature. He had a pretty good temper during the long wait at the vet. However, when she entered the room, everything changed.
The 15-year-old feline, which had lost all but one tooth and lost about a third of its body weight, escaped from the clutches of the assistant and ran to the door. There, he did his best to grab him and get him back on the exam table. He hissed. He spat. He clapped. he howled. They could hear him on the block! Two strong men, one wearing elbow-length protective gloves and the other holding a large towel, pulled the sick old man onto the table. The assistant had to hold him down with her whole body long enough for the vet to draw blood.
Then it took the two of them four minutes to drag him into his back bag so I could take him home. No one will tell him what to do!
So what does this have to do with personal change in humans? In a series of conversations about people resisting moving forward, I was talking to a coaching colleague. When we talked about clients and resistance, images came to mind of that cat, curled up in a corner, willing to kill anyone who tried to move it. I think about clients who struggle with kicking and screaming, and how it takes a little movement.
How fiercely we can fight to maintain the status quo. Even when resistance becomes futile and effort is exhausted, we continue to fight change. Anyone trying to help is exhausted!
Next time you’re faced with a golden opportunity, try anger management techniques. Stop and breathe. Pause and wait for your heart and brain to sync up before you start spitting, hissing, and jumping at the opportunity. Reach out—be it tentative. Explore it. You still have time to back off or regroup or do whatever you need to do, but consider that sometimes it’s better to get out of your corner fight than to keep fighting.
