James Odwori – Uganda’s Most Decorated and Most Exciting Amateur Boxer

James Odwori was born on October 23, 1951 and is said to have been born in Kenya as a retired boxer, Odwori became the boxing team coach for a Kenyan prison and later became Kenyan national boxing team coach.

A relatively tall lightweight boxer, the young Oldowry established himself as a The status of an international boxing phenomenon. On July 20, 1970, Aldwary defeated Scotland’s Anthony Cole in the quarter-finals. Aldwary reached the semi-finals on July 22, 1970, beating England’s Mitch Abrams. Odwori’s biggest challenge will be the 1972 Olympics, where James Odwori will naturally be seen as Uganda’s main medal hope. At 5 feet 7 inches (170 centimeters), the young Oldowry was quite tall for a lightweight. His length and long distance are added advantages. On August 28, 1972, in his first qualifier match, Aldwary showed his technical prowess after being suspended by the referee in the second round, two inches shorter than Filipino Vicente Arsenal . In his next bout on September 2, Odwori managed to stop Egyptian Said Ahmed El-Ashry at 5ft 2in in the second round. However, in the following quarter-finals on September 7, Odwori was knocked out by 5ft 4in North Korea’s Kim U-Gil (who eventually won silver), knocking Odwori out of medal contention and allowing Odwori to settle for the A respectable fifth place.

New to the Olympics, Odwari will next represent Uganda at the All-Africa Games in Lagos, Nigeria, 7-18 January 1973, again as a light flyweight (48kg). In the preliminaries, Odwori eliminated Senegalese player Babakfar in the second round. In the quarter-finals, Odwori technically eliminated Tanzanian Bakari Salamani in the second round! Next, Nigeria’s Samuel Eke lost to James O’Dwori in a third-round technical knockout. In the end, the lanky Odwarri defeated the Ghanaian Junior Chuck in a first-round technical knockout in the race for the gold medal. Odwori have established themselves as an international force to be reckoned with!

These have been busy and productive years for boxing in Uganda! Here comes the Commonwealth Games and they took place from 24 January to 2 February 1974 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Reaching the quarterfinals, James Odwori ably eliminated Tanzania’s Bakari Selemani in the second round. In the semifinals, on 31 January, Odwori defeated Singaporean Syed Abdul Kadir. Significantly, with the bronze medal, Kadir became the first Singaporean to win a Commonwealth Games medal for his country. To this day, Kadir remains Singapore’s most famous boxer. The next day, 23-year-old Odwori would be beaten by Kenya’s 17-year-old (only 5’3″) Stephen (Steve) Muchoki in what was then the final. Odwori, 5’7″ and so had to settle for Silver, a medal level he wasn’t used to. As a result, Oldwarri failed to defend the Commonwealth Games title he won four years earlier. Notably, Muchoki is by far the most awarded boxer in Kenyan history. Muchoki’s accomplishments included winning the lightweight boxing gold medal at the next Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada, 1978).

In 1974 (August 17-30) at the World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Havana, Cuba, the light flyweight Mujoki lost to Cuban Jorge Hernandez in the final and won the silver medal. Flyweight James Odwori competed in these championships. This disappointed Odwori, Odwori’s teammates and Uganda as a whole. Odwori becomes one of several boxers to be disqualified for being over the weight limit! Ironically, Odwori only recently made the cut from light flyweight, while Steve Muchoki is still at lightweight. Aldvory’s disqualification allowed his potential opponent Felipe Rojas of Argentina to advance to the next round. The skilful Kenyan Muchoki will go on to win lightweight gold in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where the next World Amateur Championships will be held. And this time Muchoki defeated Jorge Hernandez, the same opponent he faced in the final of the same tournament four years ago! Muchoki was scheduled to compete in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, but Kenya withdrew from the Games for political reasons, giving Turkey’s Alican Az an easy first-round win. Az was eliminated by South Korea’s Park Chan-Hee in the second round. Cuba’s Jorge Hernandez will knock out Park Chan Hee in the next round to eventually become the gold medalist! The same Jorge Hernandez who later became Mujoki’s most memorable international rival! Curiously, James Odwori is not listed as scheduled to represent Uganda. By 1976, the Amin regime in power was in decline and came under scrutiny and confrontation internationally. The government’s focus on sport has similarly diminished, with many of Uganda’s leading boxers missing from teams, leaving the country to turn professional, or disappointed by a lack of training or attention. Just like in other fields, the political and economic situation is not good for national sports. The Amin regime was overthrown in 1979.

The next African Amateur Boxing Championship was held in Kampala, Uganda, in November 1974; familiar home to countless Odwori enthusiasts and Ugandan competitors. This time around, Odwori moved up to the next level, flyweight (51kg). The final match saw Odwori defeat Kenya’s Isaac Kuria Maina. Uganda once again showed African dominance in a landslide, with gold also won by Ayub Kalule, Vitalis Bbege, Mohamed Muruli and Mustapha Wasajja. Meanwhile, Ugandans Ali Rojo and Jacob Odonga (who would have won Olympic gold in Montreal in 1976 after being knocked out a few months earlier by Leon Spinks in preliminaries at the World Championships in August; Mohammed Ali vying for the World Heavyweight Crown) won the silver medal.

Based on his domestic and international appearances and victories, coupled with his technique and style, James Odwori built a career in amateur boxing as fine as any other boxer in Uganda during the 1970s are incomparable. James Odwori is Uganda’s most exciting and acclaimed amateur boxer and still stands out even after decades.
