The Cortland Endurance Model 599857 Flying Reels are cleverly designed with interchangeable standard and large arbor boxes. This makes the reels great for fishing trout and salmon. It comes with four spools, 2x 7/8 and 2x 9/10, which makes the cord reel great value right out of the box. Cassettes are made of high-strength polycarbonate material. I did some research on polycarbonate and learned that it is an ultra-tough plastic used where safety and durability are important, such as bulletproof windows. This material has a superior weight-to-strength ratio and is virtually unbreakable. Polycarbonate is also much lighter than comparable materials such as acrylic, making it an ideal material for use in fishing reels where weight and strength are very important considerations.

The cast aluminum frame and spool add weight to the reel, which you’re sure to appreciate during long fishing sessions. The 599857 model features an ultra-smooth composite center disc drag that is easy to change to a left-handed or right-handed take-up. The quick release spool has an exposed edge. When I need a quicker retract, it’s a simple matter of popping the big arbor box out. For maximum support and wire capacity, standard mandrel boxes are perfect. I prefer a center-mounted drag, and this reel’s ultra-smooth cork-composite drag doesn’t disappoint. Thanks to the non-slip urethane adjustment knob and handle, the resistance can be easily adjusted from ultralight to full power, so using it in cold and wet weather is worry-free. Anglers can apply additional resistance with the exposed edge. The retaining bar makes it easy to remove the spool and lock it to the frame. I especially like that the disk drag is designed to be audible when the line is out and silent when it is retracted. The reel is 3 1/4 inches in diameter, weighs 6.4 ounces, and comes loaded with standard tape. It’s slightly heavier at 6.7 ounces when you install the large spindle case.

As far as I’m concerned, the Cortland Endurance Model 599857 Reel is a great fly fishing tackle at a great price.
