This Kid Nutrition Activity Includes a Food Group Relay Race

This nutrition activity for kids combines the learning of nutrition and physical health. Well-nourished, healthy kids learn more in school. Using these five food groups, children will learn how many food groups they need each day, how to identify foods in each group, and plan a sample menu.

With the technological age of computers, video games, and television, there is concern about children’s poor physical fitness throughout the day. Encourage your child to engage in athletic play, sports, dance, and exercise for at least an hour each day.

First, review the five food groups with your child. Discuss their favorite food and which category it falls into. For example, if your child’s favorite food is pizza, ask them which food category pizza falls into. The five food groups and serving sizes for children ages 2-11 are:

  • Milk: 2-3 cups
  • Fruit: 1-2 cups
  • Vegetables: 1-2 ½ cups
  • Grains: 3-6 oz
  • Meats and legumes: 2-5 ½ oz

Serving sizes vary based on the age of the child. A slice of bread is one serving. Three ounces of meat is about the size of a “deck of cards”.

Next, have them design a sample menu for a meal. Younger children can cut out pictures from magazines and glue them onto paper plates. Older children can write out sample menus on paper. For example, have kids plan a nutritious lunch they might want to take to school.

Finally, do a food group relay. Make five signs, each with a food category in capital letters. Paste a few food pictures from each group. Using 3″ x 5″ index cards, put one food item on one card. Make lots of cards. For younger children, attach a picture of food to each card.

To play the game, divide the children into small groups (no more than four groups are recommended). You need five volunteers to hold the food group sign. Have them keep some distance from the group, face the group and hold up the sign. Place a basket or bucket by their feet. Another volunteer will have a bag of food (index card) and the first child in line will draw a food card.

When you say “Go” or blow the whistle, the first child on each team runs to the correct food group, shows the sign holder that they are correct, and puts their food card in the basket. They will run back to their team and go to the end of the line. The next player in line will draw a card and continue the relay race. In this relay race, everyone is a winner!
