It is well known that the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Asian countries is much lower than in most other regions of the world. And, even with age, Asians don’t seem to gain the age-related weight that plagues many cultures. Of course, it’s no secret that Asians drink a lot of green tea.

Moreover, there seems to be a connection between these two facts. Green tea has been reported to have many health benefits, including prevention of disease and weight gain. Green tea consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of several types of cancer, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Green tea has also been shown to help regulate insulin, which may help prevent or manage diabetes.

Other studies have shown that green tea can help with weight loss, as it appears to speed up metabolism and promote fat loss. Green tea appears to have a unique ability to promote thermogenesis or fat burning.

For these reasons, it seems likely that a lifetime of green tea consumption may mean that you’re less and less likely to gain a few pounds each year as you age. Age – The older you are, the higher your body fat percentage and waist-to-hip ratio.

Body mass index – A higher body mass index is associated with higher body fat and a higher hip-to-waist ratio.

Premenopausal/postmenopausal – Premenopausal women are more likely to have lower body fat percentage and waist-to-hip ratio than postmenopausal women.

Habitual tea drinking – Habitual tea drinkers have lower waist-to-hip ratios and lower body fat percentages.

Physical activity – Those who exercise regularly have a lower body fat percentage and lower waist-to-hip ratio.

So, as you can see, there are a variety of lifestyle factors that can affect whether or not you gain weight as you age. Of course, age itself is a factor beyond our control, and so is menopause. What we can learn from this research, however, is that exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and drinking tea regularly throughout your life can help you avoid weight gain as you age.

Adding green tea to your diet is an easy way to help protect your health and prevent weight gain. As more research reveals green tea’s health benefits, it’s becoming easier to find. Today, green tea is available in loose or bagged form for brewing at home, as well as in bottled form for those who need a convenient iced green tea. Now, even those trendy cafes will offer a green tea option on your menu.

And, if you can’t get enough of it by drinking green tea, there are green tea supplements on the market that carry green tea’s antioxidants in pill form. However, no matter how you choose to drink your green tea, make sure you get it!
