Anti-Inflammation Diet

what do you feel you eat

Most people’s eyes glaze over when they see the word “diet,” which, frankly, is everywhere. Diet is mentioned in the title of nearly every magazine on the checkout counter, and every month some nutrition guru releases a “new” diet for every age group. This rampant oversaturation causes many to become desensitized to the idea of total dieting.

With my patients, I try to avoid this 4-letter word in our conversations and refer to it as a “nutrition plan.” Because, believe it or not, you feel everything you eat! If your main goal is just to feel better (and why not), then you need to think about the types of foods you eat.

inflammation: Your Body’s Way of Saying “Stop!”

The old adage says “you are what you eat,” but in reality, it’s much more likely that you’ll actually feel a bite in every part of your body. Certain foods can stimulate your body’s inflammatory response everywhere, but definitely in your joints.

Diet and Arthritis

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States. Based on annual estimates, an estimated 46 million American adults (approximately one in five) report a doctor’s diagnosis of arthritis. These numbers are expected to increase dramatically as the U.S. population ages. In fact, by 2030, the number of adults diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor is expected to increase to 67 million. Common symptoms include pain, soreness, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joint.

Arthritis is inflammation of joint tissue. Living with it can be quite a challenge, and finding the right cocktail of anti-inflammatory drugs can be difficult. One thing you can do to really help with pain relief is to eliminate certain foods that increase your body’s inflammatory response.

Foods that may aggravate arthritis and should be minimized include:

• Foods high in saturated fat, such as dairy, red meat, and baked goods

• coffee

• sugary foods

• Refined grains such as pasta, white rice and white bread

• Refined or processed foods (refined if boxed or canned)

• Alcohol

Foods that can help reduce inflammation in the body include:

• Vegetables and some fruits

• Whole grains, such as brown rice and bulgur

• Sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as fatty fish such as salmon, fish oil supplements and walnuts

• Lean sources of protein such as chicken, turkey or beans

• green tea

Diet and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the gradual degeneration of joint surfaces caused by overuse and insufficient repair. Cartilage wears and tears and thins over time. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and swelling in major joint areas such as the hips, knees, and hands.

While osteoarthritis is not an inflammation, a good nutritional plan is key to avoiding this painful condition.

Losing weight isn’t just good for your self-image and health, it’s good for your joints too! Clinical studies have shown that people who are 20% or more overweight are more likely to develop osteoarthritis. Weight-bearing joints are most affected by the extra weight, especially the knees, hips, ankles, and spine. Unfortunately, once joint pain begins, leading to a sedentary life means more weight gain that puts more stress on the joints. It’s a vicious circle. In such cases, a nutritional program aimed at weight loss may be appropriate.

When Diet Isn’t Everything

As mentioned earlier, some forms of arthritis do not necessarily respond to anti-inflammatory foods or medications. While being healthy can help take weight off your joints – sometimes they just wear out and you need the extra help of outside help!

Outside help!

Prolotherapy: Although more than 50 years old, this unique therapy has recently gained more attention due to the nature of its success. Prolotherapy does two things:

• short term: Prolotherapy tightens the ligaments around the joints, helping to relieve pain immediately.

• Long-term: Prolotherapy stimulates the growth of tissue in the injured area, making it stronger and more vibrant over time.

Prolotherapy stimulates the body to naturally do what it is supposed to do when injured: form healthy, strong, flexible ligament or tendon tissue. Unfortunately, our bodies don’t always respond the way they’re supposed to and need extra stimulation to get the job done. Prolotherapy is the addition of motivation or encouragement at the cellular level.

PRP Therapy: Platelet-rich plasma injection therapy, while not new, has recently attracted a lot of attention in the medical field as a viable technique to reduce pain and produce better results in healing injured and overused tendons and ligaments. A knowledgeable and trained doctor will inject platelets (growth factors) in your blood into the injured area, which stimulates the healing process and in turn reduces pain in the area.

You feel what you eat, and eating less nutrient-dense foods will definitely make you feel a lot better.

Suffering from chronic joint and tendon pain and want to learn more about Prolotherapy and PRP injections?
