Michael Waltrip Racing May Be on the Verge of Extinction

On the corporate side of NASCAR, one prestigious racing team is increasing its fortunes after years of decline, while another is reportedly on the back foot and slipping. It appears that Toyota-backed Michael Waltrip Racing is coming to an end.

MWR was founded in 1996 by Waltrip. A slow start, MW had a modest foray into NASCAR before it teamed up with Toyota in 2007. The team has gone through some limited partnerships, but was “up and running” until last year, when it received significant support from the Japanese automaker.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner’s 50/50 partnership with Fortress Investment Group’s Robert Kaufman at the end of last season’s dismal season appeared to be on firm footing, with recent rumors to the contrary.

MWR and Waltrip have vehemently denied that the team is in financial trouble, though the evidence has yet to be substantiated. MWR Officer Cal Wells III said the team was financially stable and invested wisely with no waste. He said non-essential expenses have been cut and the money has been spent in different areas to promote the long-term growth of Toyota Motorsport Development and other sponsors.

The team can survive, but more input is needed, no word yet.

A year ago, the three-vehicle start-up nearly went bankrupt. The hiring of Dale Jarrett brings instant credibility and guarantees a place in the field thanks to his interim status as a past champion. But Jarrett couldn’t repeat what he’s done in the past, and couldn’t energize the team. UPS, his longtime sponsor, emerged as a separate package deal, but with the 32-time champion and the 1999 champion gone, it’s unlikely to continue this season. Rumors continue to swirl that David Reutimann, 38, who took over Jarrett’s No. 44 Camry after retirement, is leaving.

Waltrip himself has tried to stay afloat out of pocket. Kaufman’s generosity enabled him to hire the staff he needed. This growth proved fruitful in early 2008, but things went sour in the ensuing weeks.

Rookie driver Michael McDowell took over the 00 seat vacated by Reutimann after Jarrett’s departure, but there was still no sponsor after 08 (the “stupid season” began in early summer, allowing teams to assemble and organize before pitching sponsors.). Car No. 55, driven by Waltrip, was obviously in trouble. NAPA Auto Parts has backed Waltrip since his early tenure at Dale Earnhardt Inc., but the longtime supporter wants better results or will leave, the company said.

Here are three cars that could lose their main sponsors next year. With Jarrett gone, the 44ers were unable to play. Employees were reportedly fired due to ongoing financial woes. Other NASCAR organizations also saw high gas prices, but the underfunded teams suffered the most and were the quickest to fail.

Waltrip, a popular salesman when he’s not racing or trying to pay the bills, has become a mainstay in NASCAR’s Monday this week. If his driver/owner career doesn’t work out, he has some viable options – and it hasn’t sunk to that point yet.
