Reusing Corrugated Boxes for Shipping

Can I use a box that has already been used during shipping? The answer is: sometimes!

Many times, when we receive something to send back, we don’t consider returning it in the original box. This is generally acceptable, but there are some caveats when reusing corrugated boxes.

First, make sure it’s a shipping box. Boxes rated for shipping contain a circular seal called a certification. The seal indicates that the box was tested for shipping certification.

Second, make sure there are no holes in the box. Cover any holes with carton sealing tape. Never use masking tape, duct tape, or cellophane (eg Scotch) tape for shipping. These tapes will not hold in place during shipping.

Third, make sure there are no “danger” signs. These are usually triangular symbols that indicate dangerous content that must be handled specially. In the case of Avon products, most boxes shipped to distributors have the ORM-D label on the top flap of the box. According to DOT regulations, the ORM-D label must be removed prior to shipping your Avon return or the common carrier will not be able to accept the package. The only carriers approved to handle hazardous material containers are carriers trained to handle hazardous material containers, such as UPS or FedEx customer counters (ie, local “hub” facilities). If you bring an ORM-D labeled box to a UPS Store location, you must cut the ORM-D label yourself and assure store personnel that there are no dangerous items in the container.

Finally, cover any old labels on the box. Common carrier sortation systems use barcodes, so extraneous barcodes must be masked. Note that they should not be deleted. Removing the old label will destroy the integrity of the corrugation. Never remove old labels; just cover them with new blank labels or use a marker to black out old barcodes.
