Miniature Bull Terrier Dog Breed Description and History
Description: The Miniature Bull Terrier is a well-muscled, powerfully built dog. Standing between 10 and 14 inches tall and weighing between 24 and 23 pounds, it’s stocky and short. The head is oval in shape, long and strong, sloping evenly down to a black nose. The eyes are small, almond-shaped, deeply set, and dark in color. Their ears are small and thin and set close together.
This breed has a long, muscular neck and broad shoulders. Tail set low, not long. Their coats are short, flat, dense, and rough to the touch. Two colors are recognized by the AKC; white bull terriers are permitted to have colored markings on the head, but not on the body and colored bull terriers, which may be black and brindle, red, fawn and tricolor with white markings. Their life expectancy is between 10 and 12 years.
History: The Miniature Bulldog breed began in the 1800s when bulldogs were crossed with terriers. In 1830, the sport of pit bulls fighting bulls in bullrings became popular. Lovers of the fight wanted to create a more agile dog, so they crossed the pit bull with an old English terrier, Spanish point blood. The result was the bull terrier breed, which was not as successful as the breeders had hoped, and by 1860 the dog had transitioned into the fashion of the aristocracy. The breed has been used as a guard dog, herding dog, rat catcher and watchdog. The Miniature Bulldog was first recognized by the AKC in 1991.
