5 Posture Problems That Stunt Growth
Many posture problems are ones that people have discovered over the years, perhaps without even realizing it. These can cause pain, especially in the back, and not only make us look shorter in terms of height, but also make us look shorter. Some of the most common posture problems are described below.
1. Walking posture – This is a posture that is easy to form a bad habit, probably the hardest to quit, and the least discussed of the three, the other two are looking at the next one. It is often assumed that correct sitting and to a lesser sleeping position can be taught, while walking is just something we do naturally and cannot be changed or criticized. For this reason, poor walking posture is common.
Getting to the point where you consistently walk with better posture can be difficult and may take weeks of conscious work. Keeping your back straight, pushing your shoulders back hard, and holding your head high are all ways to break this habit. Eventually, the new habit should take root and become second nature.
2. Posture – As more and more people pull up their chairs in front of their computers for work and play, the problem of poor posture is growing. Chairs, keyboards, and monitors should all be positioned so that users are forced to sit upright. LCD monitors are useful for enforcing this, as they must be viewed at a consistent angle to be fully viewed. If set up properly, any bad sitting habits will instantly make viewing the entire screen more difficult, forcing the user back to a better position.
3. Sleeping position – also very common, and since you’re naturally not aware of what you’re doing or how you’re sleeping, many people think it’s okay. Usually, sleeping on your back is the best way to maintain a good sleeping position, while limited head support in the form of a pillow is recommended. Side sleepers should tuck a pillow between their legs to prevent curling up and twisting their backs from becoming awkward positions.
4. Bow legs and valgus knees – fairly common condition that can be detrimental to posture and can also cause self-esteem issues, especially in young children. These conditions can be broken with special insoles or footwear that counteract the uneven weight distribution that causes the problem.
5. Scoliosis – The most serious condition mentioned and will almost certainly require help from a medical professional in some way. Scoliosis is a severe curvature of the spine that can lead to severe loss of height and other ailments. Advanced cases of the disease may require surgery.
By improving posture, a person can see their height gradually increase and make others look more professional. It can be difficult to break old habits, but once you do, it is even harder to change them back.
