Does Hypnosis Work?

“Does hypnosis work?” This question is asked by many people when considering the services of a certified hypnotist. The answer might surprise you.

Over the past 12 years, I have had the privilege of working with many individuals in group and private hypnosis sessions for a variety of self-improvement goals. Over time, I began to wonder why some people had amazing results while others barely made any progress. What’s at work?

The research literature on clinical hypnosis mentions a lot about the characteristic of “hypnotic competence,” the degree to which someone can respond to hypnotic suggestions. In fact, different scales have been developed to allow clinicians and researchers to classify a person’s potential to enter a viable hypnotic state.

It has been noted that a strong response to hypnosis is associated with good imagination and the ability to relax, trust and accept experiences. In contrast, people who are more “resistant” often lack imagination, nervousness, and fear.

Is a person’s score on the suggestion scale the only indicator of whether hypnosis is working for them? From what I’ve observed, while this metric does have some impact on success, it’s not necessarily the most important.

Some people who had difficulty achieving the relaxed and focused state commonly known as hypnosis have made very significant progress in achieving the desired results. There are some people who respond very well to the hypnotic process, but not quite where they hoped to be.

One variable that seems to be very important is whether the person expects that the positive changes produced through hypnosis will be an active or passive process. There are a plethora of interventions that promise to make the transition easy and hassle-free.

“Smear this cream on your thighs and buns, and without exercising or changing your diet, the fat will melt away like magic.”

“Get your ears slapped with lasers and quit smoking effortlessly.”

“Become a billionaire through your dreams.”

These are just a few examples you may be familiar with. Hypnosis counseling shouldn’t fall into this category, although I think it often does.

One of the myths of hypnotism is that the hypnotist takes control of passive “subjects” and changes them. It is entirely understandable that people have this misconception, as the complex psychology of stage hypnotic performances can contribute to the impression of the hypnotist as an all-powerful authority figure.

In fact, a consulting hypnotist is best thought of as a facilitator, enabling the client to engage the subconscious mind in beneficial ways.That’s why I do my best to let potential clients know that my services are designed to “Help those who want to help themselves.”

For example, hypnosis can help people lose weight and quit smoking by giving them realistic confidence that they can succeed if they are willing to work hard. A person who lacks self-confidence can be encouraged to face what he or she is afraid of first in imagination and then, in real life, find that the fear disappears. However, even the most skilled hypnotists need you to be an active partner in order to achieve good results. So does hypnosis work? Yes, but you have to, too.
