Essential Strength Books – Beyond Brawn by Stuart McRoberts

A dysgainer is someone who is lean and has difficulty gaining muscle mass. I followed Stuart McRobert’s hardgainer.com for a while before picking up a copy of Beyond Brawn. I am currently 6’8″ tall and usually weigh between 240-250. When I got my first driver’s license, I was 6’7″ and 150 pounds. Most of the progress I’ve been able to make has come from following what I’ve read in hardgainer.

I’ve always loved McRobert’s writing style and his obvious passion for strength training. He is a strong man who has acquired a great knowledge of the game of steel. Have you ever met someone who was so passionate about something that you couldn’t help but get excited when you heard them talk about it? That’s how I feel when my library school dean talks about cataloging (don’t laugh). He raved about it like a fiery Baptist preacher, and it was impossible not to get excited about it. (This feeling goes away as soon as he leaves the room).

Stuart McRobert’s writing sparks your interest and impresses you from the first page. Too often, books on training are tedious retellings of things that have already been said a billion times. List of essentials for recycling. Lots of tough talk, but not enough humility. When someone who achieves what I want is also willing to say “look, I’ve made a lot of mistakes in training over the years. I’ve wasted a lot of time and got hurt a lot,” it means a lot to me. At the end of any Die Hard movie, John McClane is always beaten to within an inch of his life. He does heroic things, but we know he’s going to get hit hard when he takes everyone out.

McRoberts didn’t pretend he knew it all, and he admitted his mistake. In fact, he’s so focused on his mistakes—which sounds a little silly—that you’ll get to know him by the end of the book. He’s not like a master, but an ordinary guy who figured out how to become stronger. Legendary characters are hard to identify with unless you belong to the legends club. A person’s humanity is never so fully revealed when he admits that he is vulnerable to the same mistakes, hurts, and insecurities as anyone else.

This book has two main selling points.

Anyone who puts “Encyclopedia” on the cover of any book is either a phony poser hoping to make some money before it gets exposed, or someone like Stuart McRobert. The scope and depth of encyclopedic knowledge is vast. You can only get encyclopedic content in two ways: Either a bunch of smart people come together to write lots of small articles for the next edition, or one person pays their dues, pays attention and spends time (years!) synthesizing their Knowledge for the crowded masses.

Flip through Beyond Brawn and it won’t take long to find that you’re dealing with an encyclopedia. Maybe you’re not naturally a curious person and just like throwing heavy objects around. If picking up the latest Encyclopedia Britannica doesn’t get your motors going, let me assure you, BB is a thrill ride for the power seeker.

McRobert’s Philosophical Summary

  • Inattention and information overload prevent most people from getting the results they want
  • Getting these results required hard work, but it wasn’t complicated.

  • When in doubt, reduce rather than increase the frequency of training.

Sounds like a lot of other books, doesn’t it?

It is not. He is able to say “old words” in a way that will resonate with you. He’s also great at showing what doesn’t work without condescending to anyone who practices them. Most of all, he grieves and dismays those who engage in noble pursuits, yet squander the golden years of their lives in training.

Beyond Brawn has no photo yet. Very little formatting. Simply block out intelligent, applicable information paragraph by paragraph, and you can benefit immediately. I have never read such a thick book, and I have read a lot of thick books. There are no waste sentences or paragraphs in the whole volume.

As I said before, the most important thing is McRobert’s mentality and enthusiasm…his respect for the pursuit of strength. If you’re interested in strength, positive thinking, or achieving goals, you need to read this book. It’s a self-help tool, a road map to power, a reference tool, and a masterpiece of inspiration when you need a boost to get back on track.

Read it read it read it and read it again. “Empower” is not a word I can use very often without rolling my eyes. It’s too corporate. But Beyond Brawn will make you feel empowered. You can’t wait to find it before the second page.
