Why We Are Programming Our Children to Be Fat?

If we see our children as our future, why are we making them so fat? We may be unknowingly building up rich futures for them – and I don’t mean in their bank accounts. But we can stop this dangerous trend.

As the song says, children are our future. So why are we making our kids fat? This isn’t the old “show your love by cooking delicious food” dilemma – we all do it from time to time. No, I’m talking about how we actually make our kids obese later in life, possibly without even realizing we’re doing it.

I had a lightbulb moment the other day when I was at the supermarket. I stopped at the restaurant for a coffee – what I saw made it a shorter pit stop than I had planned. It was packed with families dragging grumpy kids through their overtired hair in various stages. At one table, a boy is vomiting into a pile of napkins, and at another table, a girl is vomiting into a plastic bag. Uh, yes, I know.

After a motherly clean up – sanitation aside – let’s not go there, two mothers did something I couldn’t believe. They go right back and stuff their offspring with food! Boys go back to sausage and chips, girls go back to sodas, cheese sandwiches and chips. No vegetables or fruit in sight.

Now, call me old school, but I doubt any kid should be eating fatty food within seconds of being sick. A glass of water and rest will be more organized until the little tummy settles down. I can’t help but wonder what happened to them on the way home…

The problem is, those moms are unknowingly sending the message: “No matter what happens, you have to keep eating”. Children will — and have — grow up with the idea that they can overcome feelings of fullness and go on to eat more of the foods they love. And this food is often malnourished.

We have to start listening to our kids – if they say they’re full, let’s believe it! Let’s provide them with healthier meal and snack options when they say they’re hungry. Ready-made fruit is as readily available as potato chips. Sliding chopped veggies into a homemade pasta sauce is more delicious than a quick heat.

Best of all, if we help our kids make healthier choices, we have to show them how. In showing how, we also learn to choose better nutrition for ourselves. Everyone is a winner, and we all have the potential to be healthier, leaner, and hopefully happier. I was a pretty fat kid at school before my mom helped me make better food choices. Being teased about being fat really isn’t fun at all – don’t let the same thing happen to your kids.
