Lack of Muscle Increases Cancer Risk
Researchers at the American Cancer Society spent 16 years evaluating 900,000 people who did not have cancer when the study began in 1982. They found that excess fat may account for 14 percent of cancer deaths in men and 20 percent in women. They concluded that losing weight could prevent more than 90,000 deaths from cancer each year. This is one in six cancer deaths in the United States.
I think researchers should conclude that lack of muscle, not just excess fat, causes cancer. While you are alive, your body produces millions of cancer cells every day. However, your immune system should be strong enough to seek out and kill each cancer cell before it begins to grow and multiply in your body. As you age, you lose the ability to kill cancer cells and bacteria due to lack of muscle.
When bacteria enter your body, you must make cells and proteins called antibodies to kill the bacteria. However, antibodies and cells are made of protein, and the only place where extra protein can be stored is muscle. When you have big muscles, you have a ready source of protein from the muscles to make antibodies and cells. When you have smaller muscles, there are very limited sources of amino acids to make protein, and your immunity is often not strong enough to kill bacteria.
Also, you need antibodies to keep cancer cells in check, so as your protein reserves in your muscles decrease, so do antibodies, increasing your susceptibility to cancer.
If you’re overweight, this study should scare you into exercising more and eating less. This is the largest study ever conducted on the link between obesity and cancer, and it is also the most statistically significant. The study was more than 10 times statistically significant than the largest previous study on the topic. It is consistent with most previous research that obesity is associated with increased risk of breast, uterine, colon, rectal, kidney, esophageal, and gallbladder cancers, and increases the risk of obesity for cervical, ovarian, multiple Myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, pancreas, liver, and stomach and prostate in men.
