However, in the famous Ayurvedic treatise called Shusurta Samhita, the anatomy and physiology of the eye and all eye diseases are dealt with in detail. It states that the shape of the eye is oval rather than perfectly round. Also, it mentions that the thickness of the eyeball is similar to the thickness of one’s own thumb. Shusruta samhita also mentions that the eye has different layers, different junctions, pupils, lenses, eyelids, eyelashes etc. The clinical application of this anatomical background is also mentioned by Shusruta samhita in the chapter dealing with the classification of ocular diseases.
