There’s a more scientific explanation, but basically you’re forcing your body to produce ketones in the liver for energy. On the other hand, eating foods high in carbs and sugar causes your body to produce glucose and raise insulin levels.

While keto is new to many, it’s been around since the 1920s. Many studies have been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study concluded that with weight loss, participants were able to reduce their food intake. The Mayo Clinic has shown that a keto lifestyle can have beneficial effects on serious health conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It can raise levels of HDL cholesterol.

To enter ketosis, you need to reduce your carbohydrates to less than 50 grams per day. Ideally a maximum of 25-30 carbs. Your fat intake should be around 75% of your meal and protein around 15%. It varies from person to person, but as long as you are consistent, you should be able to get into ketosis within 3-14 days.

When you eat a lot of carbs, your metabolism spends most of its time burning carbs for fuel. You can never burn stored fat. If you reduce the amount of carbohydrates available, your body must switch to burning fat.

Seven tips for getting into ketosis.

1. Reduce your daily carbohydrate intake to 25-50 net carbs.

2. Add coconut oil to your diet.

3. Increase physical activity.

4. Increase healthy fats.

5. Fasting for short periods of time,

6. Maintain your protein intake.

7. Test for ketone levels.
