What is Recycling – Source Separation and Mechanical Sorting of Household Waste
What is recycling? This is the process of collecting materials and using them as “raw materials” for new products.
Recycling is a three-step process: 1. Collect the material. 2. Materials are processed and manufactured into new products. 3. Consumers buy goods made of reprocessed materials.
Materials are either separated and collected at source or collected without segregation. The latter is often referred to as black bag trash due to the color of the bags used in most countries.
Before we go any further, though, we should consider what a typical analysis of an average UK household waste might contain.A detailed list of the contents of these bins and wheels can be found online, but in brief, the components can be categorized as perishable, paper, glass, plastic, metal, textiles, unsorted fines and unsorted s material
The largest quantities are paper (and card) and the perishable part, which together make up most of the organic matter and moisture content in the waste. Plastic accounts for a large portion of the volume and is still increasing.
Another source of waste is household recycling center or municipal utility site waste. Urban facility waste contains large and variable proportions of wood and garden waste, building debris, furniture and large objects of all kinds.
source separation
The source separation recycling option is the least costly and most sustainable, and is the preferred option. They may focus on easily identifiable scrap of metal, glass and plastic to provide clean recycled feedstock. For domestic waste, it can be assumed that these represent about one quarter of the wet weight and a similar proportion of the dry weight of the waste.
The paper segment mainly consists of newsprint, which is easily separated but difficult to recycle economically, as more paper is often recycled than used by industry. The resulting surplus depresses the value of recycled materials.
Therefore, source separation is only effective for some garbage, and it is not applicable to all places. Some inner suburbs are finding that certain groups of people are reluctant to recycle, no matter what incentives are given, while certain property types make recycling more difficult. For example, older apartments have only one garbage chute.
This means that in most regions, additional separation of waste is required if recovery rates are to be increased above 15% to 2o%. This is called Mechanical Sorting and is performed in MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities), when they include a method of biologically treating the perishable (organic) contents after mechanical sorting, these plants may also be called MBTs (mechanical biological treatment) plants.
Domestic Waste Mechanical Sorting
This is often done to increase the proportion of material that is separated, and a large number of such sorting plants will be needed in the coming years to meet the EU’s targets for increased recovery rates and increased recycling rates.
Mechanical sorting can also be done to recover other recyclable materials that have not been separated at source, or simply to provide better feedstock for incineration or the production of waste-derived fuels.
Dry crushing and sieving is the most common method to separate the crude product into an oversized combustible “paper and plastic” fraction and an undersized “perishable and glass” fraction for anaerobic digestion or conventional composting. Wet shredding converts more of the paper into a “perishable and vitrified” fraction.
Density separation and air classification techniques can further separate and concentrate heavy glass and light plastics to provide improved material recovery and a wider range of recycled products, with a “trade off” between product quality and yield from any selected fraction.
in conclusion
The need to expand the waste industry is increasing rapidly, and even with the best efforts of the public to recycle, we will have to do increasingly complex sorting of waste as target rates increase. This will be achieved through source separation and mechanical separation technologies in facilities known as MRF and MBT plants. In fact, these plants will include a wide variety of processes, which we have only touched the tip of the iceberg in this article and are described in detail in Waste Technology and Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT).
