Laser Hair Removal – Is it Effective and Pain Free?

The biggest limitations of laser hair removal in the past were firstly pain and secondly unsafe if you have dark or tanned skin. However, with the new generation of diode lasers (which are the gold standard in laser hair removal worldwide), the treatment is more comfortable (and some can even say painless), and it’s also safe for darker skin types.

The procedure is a very gentle process. Unlike standard pulsed treatments, the new diode laser uses innovative motion technology to deliver treatments in continuous sweeps. During the treatment, high-energy beams pass through the skin and are absorbed by the pigments in the hair follicles. Instead of entering the skin like a painful explosion, the laser energy safely and gently heats the hair follicles until they no longer grow hair in the treated area.

How safe is laser hair removal

Laser hair removal has been recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an effective and safe treatment. Since the laser only destroys the hair’s ability to grow and does not affect the surrounding skin tissue, it is generally considered to be a very safe and popular method of hair removal.

How many sessions are needed for effective hair removal

The number of treatments varies from person to person because hair growth varies based on age, metabolism, hormones, weight, and several other factors. As a general guideline, approximately 4-6 treatments are required to permanently reduce hair growth.

Multiple treatments are required as the hair may be in different growth stages. In the active growth phase (85% of the hair), which can last for several years, the hair grows steadily and contains melanin in the hair. When the melanin is exposed to the laser, the hair follicles are destroyed, making this phase of hair growth ideal for hair removal.

However, the anagen phase is followed by a catagen phase (3-4%), when the hair stops growing, and a telogen phase (10-13%), when the hair is ready to be replaced before falling out. During these latter two stages, hardly any melanin is present, making it difficult to remove hair with laser treatments. As the hair in the treated area may be in different stages, it will be necessary to repeat the treatment at different times.

Where can laser hair removal be used on the body?

You can have laser hair removal on almost every part of your body, but the most common treatment areas are the underarms, arms, legs, upper lip, and chin.

Which laser hair removal method to use?

In our aesthetic clinic, we love using the Soprano XL, which uses the unique IN-Motion technology to deliver treatments in continuous swipes. Soprano XL Laser Hair Removal Rather than a treatment in which laser energy is pulsed into the skin, the Soprano XL laser safely and gently heats the hair follicles until they no longer grow hair.

The focus is on painless and effective treatments that make the hair removal process comfortable. Some even describe it as similar to a “hot stone massage”.
