Researchers Have Bad News for People Experiencing Hangovers

A European research group recently disproved the old folk adage, “drink beer before wine and you’ll feel good; drink wine before beer and you’ll feel weird”. The team conducted a study to examine whether consuming a specific sequence of alcoholic beverages could help reduce the severity of a hangover. However, for the 76 percent of Americans who experience a hangover after drinking alcohol, researchers have bad news. According to their research, no matter how much a person tries to change the order in which they drink different alcoholic beverages, they can still face a hangover if they drink too much.

Drinking Order Doesn’t Affect Hangover Severity

To find out how to help hangover sufferers, researchers recruited 90 Germans aged 19 to 40 to drink wine, beer or both as part of the study. After randomly dividing the participants into three groups, the researchers asked the first group to drink 16 ounces of beer. After this, they were asked to drink four large glasses of white wine. The second group was asked to drink four glasses of white wine first. Afterwards, they were asked to drink two pints of beer. A third group was asked to drink either white wine or beer. All three groups were under medical supervision overnight.

The researchers waited until the effects of the alcohol hangover had completely worn off and everyone had fully recovered. The following week, the scientists reconvened everyone for a second round of drinking. They asked each group to drink in the exact reverse order of the last time. For example, this time let the group that drank beer first drink wine first, and the group that drank wine first drink beer. The third group drank either of the two (beer or wine), and they were asked to drink something they hadn’t had the previous time.

The findings showed no difference in the intensity of hangovers from drinking either alcoholic beverage (beer or wine) in any particular order. Lead author Joran Kochlin, a researcher at Witten/Herdecke University, said the study rules out the age-old claim that if a person drinks beer before wine, it makes a person less hangover serious.

Vomiting and drunkenness linked to severe hangovers

Even after controlling for factors such as age, sex, weight, hangover frequency and drinking habits, no substantial differences were found in hangover scores. It has been observed that women suffer from more severe hangovers compared to men. Blood and urine tests were also performed to predict the strength of the hangover, but were unsuccessful.

However, two factors do seem to affect the intensity of hangover symptoms the next day. These include the degree of dizziness people experience while drinking and whether they vomit. On a scale of 1 to 10, those who scored higher on how they felt drunk at the end of the binge and those who vomited during or after drinking rated their hangover as severe.

Watch out for red flags when drinking

According to Kochling, the truth is that drinking too much of any alcoholic beverage can lead to a hangover. The only way to predict the severity of a hangover is to know how drunk a person is and whether they feel sick, he said. He added that everyone needs to heed these warning signs when drinking. If people ignore these red flags while drinking, dehydration, tiredness, headaches, light sensitivity and gut problems can occur the next day, all in the form of a hangover.

Although the amount of alcohol required to cause a hangover varies from person to person, a hangover means that a person has far exceeded the allowable limit for moderate alcohol consumption set by their body and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC considers one drink a day for women, Two drinks a day for men is considered moderate drinking.

The Hangover: The Way Nature Shapes Future Behavior

The researchers acknowledge that the study has its own limitations. For example, they couldn’t assign a control group to drink non-alcoholic beverages because the participants were reluctant to be part of the no-drinking group.

Co-author Dr Kai Hensel, a senior clinical researcher at the University of Cambridge, said that while hangovers are unpleasant, they do have a significant benefit. They act as a shield that may guide people over time to change their future drinking behavior.

Seeking Help for Alcoholism

Anyone can be affected by alcohol addiction, regardless of age, gender, or social status. One of the stepping stones to effective recovery from alcoholism is detoxification. The detox process helps the body get rid of all the toxins that have built up in the body from years of alcoholism, manages withdrawal symptoms, and prepares the body and mind for treatment of alcohol addiction.
