Heirloom-Quality Jewelry (Part 1)

What makes a piece of jewelry worthy of being called “heirloom quality”? What does this word mean? Simply put, heirloom jewelry is considered jewelry that is passed down from generation to generation, as “heirloom quality” pieces that may or may not be passed down, but exhibit several main qualities that one should expect jewelry to withstand many years of wear. Heirloom-quality pieces can best be described as high-end jewelry that showcase premium materials, precision craftsmanship, and solid construction. The most precious heirloom jewelry also exhibits unique designs, special treatments and sentimental value. This two-part article will help readers distinguish between rare works that are worth keeping for a lifetime and those that are less valuable.

High-quality materials

The most obvious characteristic of heirloom quality jewelry is that it is made of high-quality materials. Such materials may include, but are not limited to, high-karat gold, sterling and sterling silver, platinum, precious and semi-precious stones, and organic gemstones.

The precious metals gold, silver and platinum are valued for their rarity and beauty. Despite their malleability, these metals are very resistant to corrosion, which makes them ideal for jewelry.

Weighing 24 carats, pure gold is often considered too soft to wear as jewelry, so it’s often alloyed with other metals such as copper, silver, and titanium to strengthen it. The result is gold in varying carats and shades, and generally the higher the gold content, the more precious the piece is considered. In the United States, 14-karat gold dominates. In Europe, 18 karat gold is most common, and in parts of Asia and the Middle East, 22 or 24 karat gold is the standard. On high-end jewelry, the carat weight is often printed on the jewelry.

Silver is the most abundant of all precious metals and when highly polished it is unrivaled in its reflective properties. It is perhaps the most sought-after precious metal of all time, possibly due to its combination of durability and beauty. One of silver’s secrets is that it flatters all skin tones with ease. While it is more durable than pure gold, like gold, sterling silver is too soft by itself to be worn as jewelry. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. This combination strengthens silver while retaining its precious metal properties.

Platinum became popular as high-end jewelry in South American Indian cultures more than 2,000 years ago and, like silver, was prized for its highly reflective color. Another defining characteristic of platinum is its durability, which is unmatched by any other precious metal. Even the most delicate platinum styles retain their shape permanently; this allows jewelry artists a wide range of creative freedom when crafting intricate pieces. Most platinum jewelry is made from at least 85% pure platinum. Palladium, ruthenium and iridium, also members of the platinum family, are often alloyed with platinum to enhance its brilliance and durability.

In addition to metals, heirloom-quality jewelry can feature a variety of artfully set gemstones and organic materials. These materials range from very expensive and rare to semi-precious and colorful. What matters most is how well these materials fit into the overall design and how firmly they fit into the piece. Just because a 5 carat diamond is set in an 18 carat gold ring doesn’t mean it’s heirloom quality.

Expensive stones such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires represent gemstones. Although the rarity and preciousness of diamonds are obvious at a glance, sapphires are theoretically four times rarer than diamonds. Sapphire is extremely durable, second only to diamond in hardness, and is sometimes a rarer color than blue, known as a “flower” or “party color.” Valued by the ancient Incas and Aztecs, emeralds are the most valuable gemstones in the world (by weight). Colombian emeralds are among the most beautiful in the world due to their undiluted, pristine Green and highly regarded. An incredible crimson luster is the hallmark of gorgeous rubies, and the finest and rarest emeralds are known as “pigeon’s blood” for their unparalleled intense red color.

By definition, semi-precious stones are more abundant than their pricier relatives and are valued primarily for their beauty. Examples of semi-precious stones include turquoise, amethyst, bloodstone, cubic zirconia, garnet, agate, and opal. Although coral and pearls are not technically gemstones, they are also considered semi-precious.

Other materials considered semi-precious stones include amber, ivory, fossils, and exotic woods. Often referred to as “organic gemstones,” these materials offer unique and unusual treatments to jewelry. Amber is fossilized pine sap, most of which comes from Eastern Europe and the Baltic states of the former Soviet Union.

Ivory can come from a variety of animals, including prehistoric mammoths, but for centuries, ivory was the most prized. International ivory bans have been enacted to protect species decimated by the ivory trade, making it a criminal offense to slaughter animals solely for their ivory. Of course, ivory collected before the global ban began still exists, known as “pre-ban ivory”, and while its use was legal, many prudent jewelers opted to use ivory substitutes. One such substitute is the hard fruit of the ivory nut palm, which closely resembles the tusks of mammals.

In the second part of this article, we explore the importance of high-end craftsmanship, sentimental value and proper care of precious pieces.
