Maintaining A Healthy Immune System
Staying youthful is definitely a full-time job. This is a lifestyle choice we should stick to while we are still relatively young. The good or bad choices we make about food, nutrition and exercise can greatly determine how long we live and the diseases we are likely to develop. My passion for staying as young as possible through exercise and diet stemmed from the loss of my bride of 47 years. She passed away in March 2005. About a year and a half after her diagnosis, she lost her brave battle with pancreatic cancer. It is a deadly disease and not many people have ever beaten this type of cancer. The cause of pancreatic cancer is unknown. Smoking and a family history of pancreatic cancer are known to be possible risk factors. It’s hard for me to see her battling a disease we know so little about and have no control over.
As I look back on the 47 years we have been together, I can see many things we could have done that might have extended her life and helped her retain her youth. My wife has smoked for many years. Like many women, she struggled with weight gain and didn’t focus as much on eating healthy food as she could have and hated exercising. I couldn’t convince her to go to the gym with me.
When I was younger, I was thin, underweight, and diagnosed with asthma. My doctor advised me to exercise and start a weightlifting program. To this day, I am passionate about sports. I exercise about 3 times a week, ride my bike, and follow a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, and grains.
I now know how important it is to have a healthy immune system. Having a healthy immune system is absolutely vital to our well-being and helps us maintain our youth. Without proper immune function, disease attacks our bodies, shortening our lives and affecting our quality of life. The immune system protects us from germs and microbes every day. For most of us, the immune system does a pretty good job of keeping us healthy and preventing infections. It’s an anti-aging defense.
As we all know, problems or disorders of the immune system can be divided into 4 categories.
- allergic disease
- autoimmune disease
- immunodeficiency disease
- immune system cancer
We can protect our immune system from many of these problems by making good lifestyle choices in all areas of our lives. We can avoid fatigue, eliminate stress, eat a balanced diet, eat fresh and nutritious food, get enough sleep, wash our hands frequently, stop drinking and smoking, and exercise more. Exercise is great for your immune system. Choosing a regular exercise program can help relieve stress and make it easier to fall asleep at night. Alcohol intake can also interfere with the normal working of the immune system. Research has linked alcohol consumption to certain types of cancer and infections. Another negative effect on the immune system is cigarette smoke (inhaled or secondhand), which is full of toxic chemicals. I can’t help but believe these are what caused my wife’s immune system to weaken and lead to her death.
If you hate going to the gym and working out like my wife does, you can try dancing as an alternative exercise she loves. I’m not very good at dancing, and I often regret not studying. We could have had fun together. There are many things we can do to create a healthy lifestyle and fight the aging process. Understanding the importance of maintaining a strong immune system to fight aging and disease is just one of the areas of anti-aging that this blog will focus on.
