Off-Ice Hockey Training For Children – How Is It Different From Off-Ice Training For Adults?
Children’s hockey training differs from youth or adult hockey training in many ways. It makes a lot of sense on the ice; kids play uncensored, with mandatory face shield protection, and their practice focuses on learning the basic skills hockey requires — skating and dribbling. If being on ice makes so much sense, why not being on ice?
Ice hockey training has rightly been recognized as an integral and important part of the development and refinement of a hockey player. This is true for children as well, perhaps even more so; a child playing hockey can be guided at an early age to imbibe the work ethic that will follow him later in life.
However, when designing an on-ice training program for a child, it is important to remember that kids are kids. They are not professionals, not even amateur adults. This is where we connect with our previous statement: As with on-ice training, children’s on-ice training programs must be designed for children and appropriate to their age, mentality, and natural abilities to help them develop as ice hockey players without making them Tiring them out or making them hate practice or hockey in general. Believe me, an inappropriate training program can make a kid who loves hockey not want to put on a pair of skates again.
So how should a child’s on-ice training program be designed to reflect this delicate balance? Here are just some of the many suggestions.
Be careful with strength training. Take weight training lightly until about age 15, and avoid it altogether at an earlier age — hardly any point at those ages.
Make sure training is diverse. The younger the child, the more varied the training should be. Besides making the exercises more fun and interesting (related to point 1), this is also important for the overall development of motor skills. Hockey-focused off-ice training is all well and good, but will be limited in its effectiveness without laying down some general athletic foundations.
These are just three of the many suggestions. Of course, as the child grows, the training program should be adapted to the child’s age, physical and mental development.
